    Symmetry problems...

I'm attempting to model a character by building one side then symmetrizing to get the other side but I'm running into problems with the "seam" between the two halfs.  I've selected to weld points, bridge boundaries etc but there's always small cracks left over.  I can usually fix it by using the weld point tool but if I smooth the object it smoothes between these points creating gaps again!

I've tried cloning and transforming the clone with a -1 scale on the X axis as well but the result is the same.  Is there an easy way of symmetrizing or is there things I should be doing with my model before selecting symmetry to get this to work properly?

Never mind, reaslised what I was doing wrong - wasn't deleting the face polygons that the symmetrical side joins to.
