Sorry if this has been mentioned before...XACT CtD with no explanation

Hi, I'm working through the tutorials right now, and on the Beginner's Tutorial, when working on the 3D game tutorial, on the sound chapter, I am able to insert the wave files into the wave bank, but whenever I try to click and drag those wave files into the cue section of the sound bank, it crashes.  No message, no warning...it just disappears.  I've done this now 4 times when selecting both wave files at the same time...when I select the second one, XACT disappears.  When I try dragging them one at a time, it doesn't crash, but it doesn't work the way it should...it doesn't show up in the sound bank afterward, and when I right-click the sound bank, THEN it crashes.  I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, so if someone could tell me how to get it to work properly and not crash on me, I'd really appreciate it.

The XACT tool requires the .NET 1.1 runtime (unlike the rest of Visual Studio and the XNA Framework, which use .NET 2.0). Search for ".NET 1.1" should turn up the runtime installer for that.

    so if I've got .net 2.0, I don't have .net 1.1 anymore?

because I upgraded to .net 1.1 when it was released, then upgraded again to .net 2.0 when it was released...

edit: I just checked my installed programs, and it shows I do have .NET 1.1 installed, along with a 1.1 hotfix...is .NET 1.1 runtime different than .NET 1.1 itself?

Maybe I am am misunderstanding the steps in which you are following but shouldn't it be as follows:

    1) Create wave bank
    2) Add wav file to wave bank.
    3) Create sound bank
    4) Add wave bank item to sound bank. (IE: Dragging wav file from wave bank into the sound bank's Sound Name panel thusly creating a new sound entry)
    5) Add that new sound entry to the sound bank cue name panel. (IE: Dragging the sound entry into the cue panel thusly creating a new cue entry)

It sounds like you are trying to directly add a wav file to the cue panel and I do not think that it will work very well. I have had issues where the XACT tool will crash simply because I have tried to rename a wav file or sound/cue name through the tool itself, so I imagine there are a couple bugs here and there and maybe this is one of them. If you are following the process outlined above then I see no reason at all why you should have any problems. Maybe refresh your .net 1.1 somehow? Otherwise I am stumped as to why XACT isn't working as expected. I have personally dragged up to at least 12 file from one panel to the other in the order outlined above with no troubles.

I didn't try dragging to the sound section of the sound bank, rather than the cue section...the tutorial drags it straight to the cue bank, talking about how if you do that, it is a shortcut and will create both the sounds and the cues for the sounds at the same time...I'll post again to let you know whether it works or not...if not I'll try reinstalling the XNA, see if somehow I got a corrupt version of XACT.

well, for some reason it works for me when I do that...not sure why it wasn't working before, but thanks for the help!

What version of the XACT GUI are you using XACT.exe (November_07 or older SDK) or XACT3.exe (March_08 SDK)? When dragging waves to the CUE field of the sound bank each sound will become a cue with a corresponding sound in the sound field above. Try XACT3.exe released in the March_08 SDK if you’re not already using it.

Not an option. You have to use the version of XACT that is shipped with GS 2.0.
