    Hi,

Do I can use XNA GS 3.0 with both Visual Studio 2005 and VS 2008?

    Thanks.

Oh Thanks, I didn't noticed before...

So, it means everybody that wants to migrate your GS 2.0 project to GS 3.0 needs to use VS 2008.

I really want to use the new features of the GS 3.0, mainly the new MP3 support, that will help me a lot, and everyone want to play background songs alongside the game.

I hope don't find many differences from VS2005 to VS2008, if VS2008 keeps closer to VS2005 than that shall be a sweet task to handle.

    Thanks for the reply

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. 2008 should be very familiar to you if you're used to 2005.

If you say so, I will take a look at the VS2008 and that new GS 3.0.

Now I expect a good comparison result  :-)

Re: XNA Game Studio 3.0 Community Technical Preview (CTP) Discussion Thread

We have another one. I just port a sample game from my book to Zune :)

Check in http://www.sharpgames.net/Noticias/Rock+Rain+Zune.xna . Sorry folks, it´s a brazilian XNA Portal, but find the 'download' link ok ? :) The code and source comments are in english, of course.

I run it in a "old" Zune, without toutchpad..someone can please test it in a "new" Zune model and give some feedback?

    Enjoy,

I'm confused about something.  If the 3.0 CTP does not support the Xbox 360, does that mean that the Xbox LIVE Community Games Beta will be with 2.0 and the Xbox LIVE Community Games release will be with 3.0?

It depends on when the community games beta comes out and if GS 3.0 gets a revision that runs on the 360. Bottom line nothing has been announced yet so we dont know and there is little point guessing or speculating.

So, if I don't plan on writing games for Zune, then there is no point me installing the CTP?

Here are the main reasons (in my mind) to try out the CTP:
    • Zune support
    • New Media namespace with SoundEffect and MediaPlayer APIs
    • Visual Studio 2008 support

If none of those are of interest to you, then I would say just keep on using 2.0 until the full 3.0 release.

1.1.1. Zune Development Is Not Supported on 64-Bit Operating Systems

The XNA Game Studio 3.0 (Preview) does not support development of games for Zune if XNA Game Studio 3.0 (Preview) is installed on a 64-bit operating system such as Windows XP Pro x64 Edition or the x64 versions of Windows Vista®.

oh come on! The entry for Zune development is already ridiculously high and now you're telling my operating system won't support it?!

    god damn it.

That's what I thought. I Was actually hoping that v3 would have improvements to other areas of the API, not just support for Zune. VS2008 support and the new media namespace are nice but not necessary for me.

Re: XNA Game Studio 3.0 Community Technical Preview (CTP) Discussion Thread

Its a CTP folks... In general (each group defines them differently)

    RTM > RC > beta > CTP > alpha

So not working on x64 and not having all the new features on all the platforms is to be expected at this stage in the game.

In addition I should add the standard disclaimer about how there are a limited number of people on the team with a limited amount of time to put in the limited amount of features. In every release there are some things that will make some people happy and some people sad.

Well the community games beta was announced to come out in the spring, which is only a month and a half away.  I suppose Xbox 360 support in 3.0 could come before then, but why wouldn't they have postponed the 3.0 CTP a small amount instead?

But you suggested not to speculate, so never mind that.  :-)  However, it would be really nice to know what version the community games beta will be.  I'm working on a game in preparation for it, and to be safe I'll have to ignore 3.0 for the moment.

Does anyone have any code samples as to how to use the SoundEffect class? I have an idea from the help file, but it doesn't mention what kind of file I need to load in the Content.Load method. Does it just take a wav file that I put in the Content subproject? Or does it need a Sound Bank?

Check out the SoundManager class in my Alien Aggressors Zune port: http://nick.gravelyn.com/2008/05/07/alien-aggressors-zune-edition/. Should show you how to play sound effects and music in the new audio API.

Edit: You can skip the download and just view the code here if you would like: http://xnawiki.com/index.php?title=Basic_Sound_Manager_For_XNA_GS_3.0.

Nope. Definitely very far from being a release candidate.

The port to 3.0 is quite simple, as the core libraries haven't changed much that I can see. Thus, I suggest that you stay on 2.0 for now, until you know. It's going to be within a month and a half anyway. It's probably safer that way anyway.

Also, I wouldn't think it would have to do with C# 3.0, as that is just a new version of the compiler. It all compiles down to run on the same .NET 2.0 runtime.

From what I've heard from talking to people, there are some runtime changes that require .NET 3.5 to take advantage of a few of the C# 3.0 features. I was told that even extension methods have a small runtime change to be used, so it's not quite the same 2.0 runtime to use them.

I think extensions methods are a compile-time feature. The compiler reads at that time what methods are extensions and let you to use them in an elegant manner. I think it only changes myString.MyNewMethod() by MyNewMethod(myString). The only thing it needs to distinguish an extension method is the "this" special argument. But you can do special arguments as well, by marking them with some custom attribute. I think the compiler marks the "this" argument by using some new custom attribute which is within the new assemblies, so no changes are needed in the runtime to support extension methods. That's my assumption, but I would follow that approach in order to add this kind of feature.

That's a very good question. I want to know if Xbox LIVE Community Games, when they are released for all users arround the world (not the beta), will be 2.0 or 3.0. Can anybody answer this?

As discussed above, no. Nobody knows the answer to this right now. We all just have to wait and see. I'd follow Jon's advice of "Assume 2.0 for now because it's easier to add the new stuff that's in 3.0 than to remove the 3.0 stuff to downgrade to 2.0".

I think its safe to say that for the FINAL RELEASE (Holiday 2008) will be 3.0.... sticking with 2.0 would mean the team have to support 2 versions and that very rarely happens at Microsoft (or any other company).
