Windows Networking....

    Windows Networking....

    Hello all!

A quick question... what is required to do networking on a windows machine? In my understanding, all one needs is a windows machine, and a silver profile on live that can run code....

So far the networking on windows is completely not working.... In all the samples provided by microsoft, it asks to download an update, telling me a restart may be required... So far, it gets all the way to almost the end of the bar (progress would be nice!) and freezes there...

I so far have the trial given by the DBP for running code on the 360... Do I need a full out premium membership, and I'm just unaware? Or is it a problem with my computer?

Thanks in advance for the help.

To use system link networking you need:

    • A local user profile, which you can create for free using the Guide interface that comes up when you press the Home key

For PlayerMatch games over the Internet you need:

    • A Live Gold account
    • An XNA Creators Club subscription

From your description, though, it sounds like you aren't even getting as far as the error you would see if you didn't have the right account. This sounds like the Games for Windows - LIVE update process is failing for some reason. I'm afraid I have no idea why that would be.

Unless... any chance you are using a dual core AMD machine? If so have you installed their dual core optimizer BIOS patch? Machines without that fix are known to have issues running GFWL.

    Thanks so much!

    Exactly the problem -  I've got a 4600x2....

    I'll see if that works....

    Hmmm....

Seems to have had the same problem - but this time, the window exited itself...

Does it work for systemlink?  When using a local gamertag and system link, it shouldn't connect to live and so that update shouldn't come into the picture.

    Re: Windows Networking....

It doesn't work at all, that's the problem... (I've tried it on a system link setup...)

I think because the XNA framework depends on Live for some of it's functionality, it needs to download the update to my machine. However, the silly "integratedness" of the update prevents me from downloading it... Which means no Live on windows... Which means no system link... I think that's the problem.

I've looked, and it seems the update only can be gotten by this client that pops up as part of the XNA Framework.

Anyone have a suggestion? I ran the 2007 1.1.2 version of AMD's Dual Core Optimizer (Got it off the AMD site....) Is there a newer version I need?

Do you get the same error when the network is disconnected?  With no network connection you should still be able to launch a network sample, bring up the guide and sign-in.

Also, do you have any other G4WL titles installed?

    Re: Windows Networking....

Well, I'll try that. Though I don't think it'll make a difference, since it needs to download an update...

I don't have any G4WL games installed... Or own any for that matter.... What are they, btw? There's only two, right? I'm on XP...

    Re: Windows Networking....

Well, as I suspected, disconnecting from the network (i.e no internet) just gave me a "can't connect" error...

Is there perhaps a .zip of the update? Then it wouldn't have to do it in the clever G4WL way, and it would work.

Fixed! Found the 1.2 redist off of the microsoft site - works perfectly now.

Thanks for the help before guys!
