    royalty free music??

heyya, well, my team we have artists (3D and 2D) programming also isnt a problem. the only problem is the music.

what about the old classics though (beathoven, chopin, bach, mozart... all their big symphonies vandelised by furniture adverts and bad movies) i presume by how frequently that theyre used and how they seem to pop up allot in media that theyre royalty free.

    is this true?

and also is there a resource to check whether a certain piece of music is free to use?

we'd plan to re-write the music into Midi files and then put it into our games.

just dont really wanna break any laws and i dont really know anything about it. except that copyrights are only valid for a certain amount of time.

    Thanks Dead.Rabit

Classical music is what you call "public domain." do a google search on it.

    Re: royalty free music??

There are at least three kinds of protection for a recorded work that you purchase on CD.

The first is the rights of music & lyrics. For the good-old masters, that's all in the public domain. Yeah!

The second is the rights of the recording -- the orchestra or soloists playing. Typically, those rights have not yet expired, so you'd have to go to the right holder for the recording to get those rights.

The third, and sometimes overlooked right, is that of the physical media. The bits on the CD (as well as the song titles, CD art, etc) are covered by a specific, physical right. If you want to clone a disc, you would need to get the physical rights of the disc as well as the rights of the performers (and perhaps also the music & lyrics, if they're for stuff still under protection). And before you think you'll never clone a CD, if you rip the bits from a CD to a lossless format, someone may be able to claim that that's an infringement of the physical rights, if you use it outside of fair use.

So, the easiest way to avoid copyright problems with music, is to get ahold of the tablature for some old classical composition, and programming it into your own MIDI sequencer, with the appropriate instrument sounds. It won't sound as good as a live orchestra (even if you work hard at it and know what you're doing!) but it will probably be good enough. Note, of course, that the tablature itself is also under a separate copyright, similar to that of the physical rights of the CD, so you can't just find scans of tablature on the web, unless it's scans of published sheet music from 100 years ago...

If you don't have the skill or inclination to program the MIDI sequencer yourself, perhaps you can find someone who does, and who is willing to sign the rights of his work over to your game?

I suspect it is probably easier to find a musician to do this for you!

In these days of high quality and cheap music recording software, the world is full of talented kids and wannabe bands who can produce great quality recordings right out of their bedrooms or basements. It is no longer the case that you need a recording contract to pay for expensive studio time to get good results.

If you don't already know any musicians, ask the teachers at your local high school or college, or stick a note up on the wanted board at your local music shop. Be honest about what you want and what you can offer (are you just starting out yourself, or are you an experienced game developer? Do you expect to make any money from this, and if so how much can you offer to share with the musician, or is it just for fun? What style and how much music are you looking for? etc) and I bet you'll find plenty of people who would love a chance to get their music into a real live Xbox game...

This is all royalty-free and released under the CC license. Most of the tracks are fairly monotonous but there are a few gems.

Aha, misunderstanding I think. It's not my work, it's just a site I came across a while back and have had bookmarked ever since. :)

    Re: royalty free music??

I would be willing to do worktrade after my DBP is finish...meaning spetember 23 :)

But I don't do orchestra music...I can do anything from jazz to heavy metal, and pretty much anything in between (trance, Rave, classic rock, blues, folk)...It will be all original and all yours...and I'll trade for some 2D artwork....nothing major, a couple animated sprites and maybe some improved UI stuff...
