where to purchase a sound effects CD or DVD?

Any suggestions on a sound effects CD/DVD I can buy, and where I can buy it from?  Finding free sounds off the Internet is time consuming.  I thought if I bought a sound effects CD or DVD filled with explosions, futuristic weapon firing, etc., it would be much easier to fill in the sound effects we need.  If anyone has already done this, I would love a nudge in the right direction.

As a general rule of thumb, you can frequently type whatever you want in a browser's address bar - as though it were all one word - and then just add .com to it.

You'll find that sample CDs are not cheap, and that the ones you can buy inexpensively don't always give you the license you want - they're often intended for people to use when performing live (the BBC sound effect libraries used to be notorious for this, but I haven't looked at them lately).

What you want is a "sound effects library." However, those are frequently quite expensive (thousands of dollars), and don't always focus on games (often used for movies and TV, for example). An alternative is to use a large sound effects site like SoundSnap and search for keywords there -- a purchased library is not going to be any faster or better matching to what you need than that site.

If you do want to spend money, you could also just hire a sound guy, and make it his problem...

And of course you could always just do something like this as well...much more reasonable in price. You'd have to read the license file to see if it meets your needs.

I bought this at CompUSA for about $5 and it's worked great for placeholder sounds for me. I got frustrated trying to find sounds online too.

Although that's not a CD/DVD, a resource on the net that I found very useful (with all free sounds) is:

I also like http://www.freesound.org/ - I find it easier to navigate, but the licensing (Creative Commons) is a little more onerous.

I'll just have to try all suggestions.  $5 for a CD is not bad at all.  I already have soundsnap and freesound bookmarked from before! :)

I second the Soundsnap website...I love that site!
