zeit² - shoot'em up with time travel (UPDATE ccgame download now available :-)

We finally finished our game zeit² and now im excited to share some pictures and a gameplay video with you.

Zeit² is an arcade style shoot'em up game for XBOX 360 and brings real innovation to the genre. Its awesome time travel feature has yet to be seen in this genre after decades of brilliant games. Get the side scrolling arcade action and discover how you can assist yourself in many exciting ways just by traveling back in time! Blast away a variety of enemies like you never could before!

The simple two button controls make it easy for casual players to get started and get hooked on zeit², while its game play spoils hardcore players by giving them so many possibilities to improve their high score.

you can watch the video on zeit2.bedenk.de

or download the ccgame file and give it a try thanks for the support

    looking forward to some feedback...

It's very nice . I like the explosions/traces of moving stuff.

The rewind ability is also new (I guess) for the XNA/Indie games.
Out of curiosity-is this a single player and are there any other levels :)

Yes it is a single player game. There are 10 chapters with different enemies. It takes quite a while to play through it. Actually I only made it through the whole game once. But you can start over at any level/chapter you reached before. And really its about the high score ;-)

Time travel is the new 3D.

Doom came out, and suddenly everything was 3D shooters.

Braid comes out, and suddenly everything has time travel.

I can't be too critical of that, since Railgun itself has time warp. I think it's one of those ideas that everybody has been thinking about and playing with for a while, and now we've crested the bell curve where everybody's going to stick it into everything - so in a couple years we'll find it odd if a game doesn't have time travel.

Very nice work on the game! Looks like a solid contribution! Braid wasn't the inventor of timetravel, have you ever played Prince of Persia? and I'm sure there were other games before that too.

Looks really very nice! It is a great game idea, I have watched the hd trailer twice =)
Tomorrow I have to make the trailer of my game and on Monday I will upload the game! Do you have already uploaded the game?

    The video looks fantastic!

I was going to put a video up on Vimeo too, but after I created an account I noticed the "no gaming videos" rule.  It's a shame, because their quality is way above Soapbox or Youtube.  Are you worried about them pulling yours down?

Brilliant-looking entry. My only qualm is that it's not a vertical shooter, but that's just a matter of personal preference. = D

Braid comes out, and suddenly everything has time travel.

Before Braid, there were many others.

Prince of Persia might have been the first to use time traveling in an unscripted way, but after it many small and large games took advantage of that before Braid.

Heck, even my DBP warm-up entry last year had time warping features in it... not that it mattered :) Oh, and one of the DBP 2007 finalists, Shuggy.

It's not a new mechanic. It's been here for years.

But the final milestone in my opinion is a RPG with full time-travel. Like having a period of 500 years where you can move back and forth freely to any location in time and the universe behaves correctly :)

There were also 3D games before Doom, but they were rare before it and near-ubiquitous afterward.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. Its awesome after putting so much effort into it :-)

Others said it already, that Braid was not the first game to have a time travel feature. But thats not the point. More important is how brilliant Braid is and how it made a great game out of it. Its not so much the mechanic but what you make out of it. I had the idea before I even saw braid, now I played it and love it, but nevertheless its a very differnt game to zeit². Personally I don't know of any shooter that had a rewind. But even if there were others its more about does this specific game concept work or not. Its the same with 3D. Some games need 3D to work and develop features around it and for some games like lemmings or worms its just a burdon that makes them complicated.

We didn't decide yet if we make a demo or even the full game public as a ccgame file. If we decide so I will annouce it on the website and let you know. I would really like others to enjoy playing it so there is a good chance :-)

If anyone's getting the idea that I'm somehow criticising this game for having time travel, that's not it at all. Time travel is one of those mechanics that's been floating around for years, but since Braid came out it's been higher-profile and more common. It's only been a short time, though, so most of the games implementing time-based features had to be planning them before Braid came out.

Back in the 1980s, we had - in rapid succession - a half-dozen movies about adults and children switching bodies. We had 18 Again, Vice-Versa, a remake of Freaky Friday, the list went on. It was an idea that simultaneously occurred to many people who thought "that would make a good movie". I think the whole time travel thing is similar. It's what the Germans call... oh, come on, you must know the word zeitgeist. Human action but not human intent.

Okay, we're never going to agree on that subject, so we should probably avoid it before I get another thread locked. ;)

Looks really good. I'm not a big fan of the sidescrolling (or vertical) shooters, so it's probably not going to be much fun for me, but it definitely looks well made. Nice job!

Looks excellent! Very nicely polished. I loved the video and I would definitely give this game a try if it was on XBLCG. Best of luck to you in the competition and thanks for sharing the results of your hard work!

Re: zeit² - shoot'em up game with time travel feature :-)

Thanks for releasing the .ccgame file.  I tried zeit last night in the few free mins I had.

Here's my first 5 min impressions:

     - Took longer to load than most games I've tried, I figured it was a good thing as it means there must be a lot of content :)

    - Tried a quick test game and it was fantastic.  Even better than I'd imagined from the video.  I can't wait to try it again tonight.

    - Went to the help screen to find out what all the different things in the game were/did but unfortunately I can't read the help screen on my TV.  The font is too small to make out, it's a older SD ~50 inch rear projection TV so it's not small but the low res and small fonts make it too hard to read (it's all fuzzy).

    - Was going to check out the credits but the menus reacted faster than I expected and I acidently hit 'quit', since the load time was so long I decided I'd check it out again later rather than start it up again.  Maybe a 'do you want to quit' screen would be good?

We already optimised loading time but I know it takes to long. I read texture sheets might help since we are using a lot of single sprites in the game.

You are right I should have thought of SD screens, somehow I thougt XBOX = HD

We have the "do you want to quit" leaving the gameplay screen but you are right maybe we should have implemented it for the manu screen as well.
