Try running the msi installer with a /L switch from the command line.. it should write a log file

Just to confirm, you are installing the actual Game Studio from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=12ADCD12-7A7B-4413-A0AF-FF87242A78DE&displaylang=en, and not just the Framework?
Reason I ask, is I made that mistake the first time I installed, and wondered why I saw no shortcuts anywhere.
