What sprites and sprite sheets do you want to create? Many frames in one sheet? An animated object pr. sheet?

I usually just create a new project in photshop, devide the image into a grid and start drawing in them. You can use drawingskills or import images from a 3d model you have created..

You can look up sprite maker or sprite builder in order to get started! :)

I've been using Flash CS4 to animate my characters and then export the individual frames.  It's certainly a powerful tool but it's far from cheap (~$600 for retail though you can get it for less if you're a student).  I've found CS4's bone/IK animation tool to be quite useful for quickly making good, fluid animations.

As for creating sprite sheets, I found this the other night after many hours of searching: GlueIt.

It's a fairly simple tool that I've been using to stitch the frames Flash exports into sprite sheets.  It does have some shortcomings and I'll probably just end up writing my own sprite sheet creation tool when I have some free time, but it gets the job done.

Have a search around the web for SWF tools and code. You will find a C# library the parses the SWF file and can draw the graphics.

With a bit of extra code you can write an exporter that will create your sprite sheet directly from a swf file.

Then all you need to do is store a single animated swf for each sprite and convert it using the tool.

It took me half a day to do the same.

Sadly it was for a client and I can't just give you a copy......

There's a tutorial on sprite sheets in the Education section of this web site:
