Anyone who uses this quote feature, which now I am shamefully guilty of too, should read this amazing article:

"
Q. Why don't you show me the post I'm replying to, while I compose my reply?
A. Because that will tempt you to quote a part of it in your own reply. Anything I can do to reduce the amount of quoting will increase the fluidity of the conversation, making topics interesting to read. ... Sometimes people still try to quote things ... because they're mindlessly nitpicking and they need to rebut 12 separate points. These are not bad people, they're just programmers, and programming requires you to dot every i and cross every t, so you get into a frame of mind where you can't leave any argument unanswered any more than you would ignore an error from your compiler. ..."
The recent threads I've participated in, in which everyone is picking apart posts sentence by sentence, was a reminder of how evil this quoting feature is. This article immediately came to mind.
Nick, you'll find the entire article interesting; you won't regret the time reading it. It talks about how forums thrive, and even touches on the whole topic-splitting / branching issue when threads go off-topic. I'm not saying this is a solution to all mod's problems, nor that you should change your style, but any mod on here (or any forum participant) will find this interesting. :)
