    Weapon Type Nomenclature

So in my game, ships either have what I call turrets, which are weapons that can swivel around and shoot any direction, regardless of the ship's orientation.  I also have guns that are locked on the ships that only fire in the direction the ship is facing.  Right now I'm calling them "Foreward Guns" but there's gotta be a better name for them.  Can anyone think of a better name for them, preferably less than 10 characters in length?

It would be Forward Guns anyway, a Foreword is the message an author writes to you before you start reading his book.

If facing forward, "Primaries" or "Main Guns"
If facing sideways, "Secondaries" or "Belt Guns"

    Geeky non sequitur:

I think a fixed weapon on a fighter would be of little use in a space battle. In air combat, fighter pilots end up having to trade height for speed or vice versa. Stay above your target and you force him to climb, sacrificing speed. This creates a firing lane where you can take your shot with the machine gun. In space you never have to sacrifice speed because height is relative to each pilot. There are no opportunities to set up a firing lane.

If a ship did have a fixed weapon, I would hope it would be something like the guns on Battlestar Galactica. Here's how it works: they call it the Firing Solution because, well, they put so much firepower into a concentrated area that it would tear to ribbons any ship that drifted into the solution. Then the smaller fighters can dogfight around the solution using some of the more traditional air tactics because drifting into a Firing Solution would be a lot like crashing into the ground. You're fighting to push the other fighters into the solution before they do the same to you.

    Re: Weapon Type Nomenclature

If it's a capital ship (large-scale vessel), then the terms I like best are:
"Forward Battery" (Battery is technically more than one gun)
    "Forward Cannons"
    "Bow Cannon"
    "Bow Emplacement"
    "Fore Cannon"
"Primary Cannon" (If it's the biggest gun on the ship)

If you must specify the direction:
    Cardinal Gun/Cannon
    Ordinal Gun/Cannon
    Axial Gun/Cannon

For fighter-style ships (why would a fighter have a movable turret?)  you probably don't need to specify directional orientation, the default assumption should be forward-pointing.

If it is common for ships to have fixed guns in the bow, especially if the gun is of a unique type which is always placed in the bow, then you don't need to specify it's location.  For instance, in Halo, all human ships have a MAC gun in the bow, and it is never located elsewhere.  On submarines, torpedoes are almost always forward-mounted.  In both of these cases, you don't have to specify where the weapon is located, because it's always in the same place.

Good stuff guys =).  Fixed Guns is the winner for me!  It's descriptive, simple, and short.  Second place goes to "Pi Challenged guns" for making me laugh :P

I can't finish any of my 100 games, but if I can make someone laugh I call it a good day.
    Good luck on your game!
