Rumble Massage & Aquarium HD are out & replaced with newbies Urban Art Gallery & Sketch. The closest thing we have a to real game is A Morons Challenge(excluding Kodu of course). Let's hope those "quality projects" mentioned by Microsoft's Charlie Skilbeck are coming quick...

As I've pointed out before, everyone keeps championing Kodu for beating out these "apps"...but Kodu itself *IS* an app! It's not a game that's for sure. It's an application people can use to create user created games. It definitely can't fall into the game category by any stretch so an app is still reigning supreme on the list. It just happens to be an app people aren't complaining about...

Kodu is an example of what happens if you produce a HIGH QUALITY app which is MARKETED well.... compare the production values in Kodu with 90% of the games. Google Kodu and then google your game... notice anything? Yes I understand having Microsoft behind you doing your marketing helps but its does show what happens when both of those things come together... you can't just kick a half completed game with developer art on here and expect it to sell.

With the game sharing ability(and it's new push update coming) it can definitely fall into the game category. People can just buy it knowing that they can get lots of games for free. It's a lot more unique than the other apps & it deserves the championing it gets over the competition.

Surprised about Kodu dropping from 1 to 4.

Not much more commentary since I'm so behind...

The following week(July 27) Major Nelson's list is identical to July 20. Looks like a goof. Here's the list for last week (August 3)...

Kodu is about gone! Wow. Maybe that first patch turned everybody off? I think it would do a lot better as an XBLA title. At least the massage apps are off the list, but there are still very few traditional games on the list.

I'm not surprised. You get some initial hype which draws in people until they all realize that making games is hard and they'd rather play than create. There was no doubt in my mind that Kodu would not last very long at the top.

Interesting shakeup in the past few weeks, maybe the name/price changes are attracting a different demographic. I think we can safely say that Kodu DID beat out the massage apps, as it's the only one in the top 10. I wonder what kind of user ratings massage apps will get...

Looks like the Top Rated category is actually having an effect on the Top Sold. Miner Dig Deep hasn't been in Top 10 in forever. Unfortunately not all in the Top Rated are feeling the effects since Kodu is now off the Top 10 & Emuze & Carneyvale Showtime aren't in the list either.

Agreed. BTW, Madrism is on the US Marketplace. I've downloaded it. Kinda wierd, it's about building house plans. ;)

Kodu is back on the Top 10. Looks like both the Top Downloaded(9 in the list)  & Top Rated(3 in the list) lists are having varying affects on the bought list. Love how such a great like IMAGWZ can go from nothing to #1 in a week. That should be a great clue to XNA developers that to get the crazy sales you'll need a great game with a great hook at a great price. But let's hope they don't just make more clones either. We don't need clones, we need variety.

I understand that Kodu & massage apps ares no longer in the list, but it's nice to have one place to look at the lists for comparison & posterity.

I think we can safely say that having user ratings has done what we wanted it to do: let the better games & apps percolate to the top.

EDIT: If a mod could split all the Top 10 messages to it's own thread then we might could put this thread to bed.

Or people can just bookmark or subscribe to the RSS for Major Nelson's top ten page: http://majornelson.com/archive/tags/Top+10/default.aspx. There's little to no point in just copy/pasting them over here considering there's really no discussion happening around them. And since his site has all of them in one easy to find place, it would be redundant to duplicate that on these forums.

I like having a place to look for top this week and past week.  Keep it up :)
