Entry form?

    Entry form?

I've just uploaded an entry, then notice this in the fine print :

First, navigate to the Site (www.dreambuildplay.com), and submit in a single .zip file (maximum size 200MB) the following:

    (1) The Game in .ccgame XNA Creators Club Package format (Note: please verify the Game works prior to sending); and

    (2) The "Game Synopsis." Upon submitting and uploading the .zip file containing the Game and Game Synopsis, complete an official Contest entry form. The official Contest entry form must contain a link to the Game Demo.

Er, I uploaded my description, screenshots & game file and clicked the 'Submit for Judging' button...is that the "entry form"? On my "My Account" page is says I can unsubmit. Have I missed something?

    Thanks.

    Re: Entry form?

I was under the impression that the zip file only needed to contain the game .cc file and the other fields on the website I filled out (description, screenshots, etc) were for the other pieces. It sounds like the fine print doesn't match what is stated through the interface. Asking for a demo seems bizarre... maybe that's just a copy from a previous DBP contest???

Being able to unsubmit is normal... and if I didn't do this right, I may have to do that too and send in a zip with all that stuff (though it doesn't make sense to have to do it twice).

    Re: Entry form?

No, you didn't miss anything. There is no field in the entry form for a "Game Demo". The mentioning of "Game Demo" in this sentence of the official rules is, AFAIK, the only mentioning of something called "Game Demo" anywhere in the rules or the entry form. There also is no sensible explanation of what a game demo is supposed to be in the context of DBP: Since the full game is already submitted in form of the .ccgame file, what sense would it make to also submit a link to a demo version of the same game?
There are different interpretations floating around of what this could mean:
    • Could be a typo, and it actually means "game video".
    • In earlier years, people speculated that you were supposed to put a version of your ccgame on a webserver somewhere and supply a link to it in addition to submitting the ccgame itself, just in case that the submitted ccgame is lost/corrupted, so that the jury could access the ccgame on the website instead. I think that doesn't make sense, because then it would allow you to consciously submit a broken ccgame and rely on the jury getting the ccgame from your site instead, where you then would have the opportunity of exchanging it with a newer version if you want, essentially getting you a deadline extension.
But even if this interpretation were true, then most probably it was true only for a previous DBP, but not for this year's, as the entry form has no field to supply this link.
    • The "official rules" have lots of other inconsistencies too (within itself and with the entry form). My guess is that the rules text is recycled from year to year, and the process of editing it each year is not very exact, giving you all these small inconsistencies. With this interpretation, the requirement for the "Link to the game demo" could stem from an earlier contest, when you didn't submit the ccgame file directly, but only a link to it. Or maybe even from another competition, if the initial DBP rules were written with another competition's rules as the base - and in that other competition the game was submitted by providing a link to it.

In short: I, and others, have simply ignored this. But that's my interpretation, if you follow this advice, you do so at your own risk!

    Re: Entry form?

Someone from the Dream Build Play team will have to step in and clarify this.  This is two years in a row for me without ever understanding what they want.  For what it's worth, my guess was they meant a link a to the game video.  My reasoning was that if the link was to a .ccgame file, then they probably would have described this elsewhere in the rules.  And they do describe uploading a video (which can be linked to) elsewhere in the rules, so it is more consistent.  It appears to be an ambiguity-typo.
