XNA chat website - now open to ALL MEMBERS!
|
Hi guys,
I've created a website for general chit chat, exchanging contact details, and anything else that's inappropriate for these forums. We see each other on here all the time but never really get to just socialize so I thought it would be a good idea. It's for Creator's Club members only and it's at xnachat.com. I will try to be on there a lot to welcome new members.
It's designed so you can just leave the browser page open and hear a notification when new messages come through (kind of like MSN). It has a public chat area, and then you can do private chats with people as well. It would be real convenient when people want to share an email address / phone number with another member and don't want to post it on the forums.
Hope you like it!
Matt

The sign up process doesnt work if you not a full memeber of this site.
I get the following error when I click the link to enter the first word in the thread
Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error
Description: An
application error occurred on the server. The current custom error
settings for this application prevent the details of the application
error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could,
however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the
details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote
machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a
"web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the
current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have
its "mode" attribute set to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

That's strange. It's a link to a thread on this website so it would seem that this website has a bug that triggers occasionally when accessing a thread you don't have permission to view...
It's a bit of a shame that non-full members can't signup, but this is the only way I can think of to make it exclusive to us.

What makes one a "full" member? I'm getting the same error,

I'm assuming a full member is most probably a premium member.

Hurray! I can get to that site from work. :)
edit: looks like sounds and blinking the window aren't working, at least using FF. I do also have Pandora Radio playing so that could be a problem.

It uses flash to do the sounds, not sure if pandora would conflict with it. The flashing should just work althoug, it didn't seem to work on the mac version of FF so I guess it may not on windows either. I want to fix the sounds and flashing so they only happen if the window doesnt have focus

Hmm, I could if you can think of a way the signup script could automatically verify it! At the moment it just provides a link to a page that only premium members can access, and asks for the first word. If there were pages on this site that any member but *only* members could access then that would be useful :-)

Why do you only want premium members anyway? Its not like you have any premium value like the membership does.
Plus how long do you really think it would take a non member to get that word?

It's not that I *only* want premium members. I just really *don't* want non-members (ie. random walkins off the interweb). This is the only way I could think to do limit that and the unfortunate side-effect is that it excludes non-premium members.

I don't think it'll be a problem for now. If it did become a prob I could change which page it links to on a regular basis...

I will just have to put up with the membership prejudice!!!
I really don't see why you don't allow non premium memebers to join, if they become a issue you could just ban them?
Looks like I will have to make a site that all memebers can talk on lol

OK, as I've said I do really want all members to be able to join. Since I can't work out a way to allow that while still verifying they're an actual member of some kind I've decided to open it up to the world.
If anyone can think of a way I can limit it to all Creators Club members please let me know, but for now anyone can join.

Thank you.
Maybe do a user verification?
I think your better waiting for it to become an issue first rather than trying to code a solution.
What benefit will people get for signing up (other than spam)

Personally, I would point them to one of the FAQs :) Then it's a win win for the site. Someone might actually read a FAQ (or at least learn where that section of the forum is located) *AND* it's unlikely that some random passer by is going to go hunt down a particular word in the FAQ (especially since it seems most people avoid them like the plague). The FAQs are accessible to all Creator's Club members. Maybe the "Help! I'm new!" FAQ..

Just a follow-up - started the chat this morning using IE and I get sounds. Looks like my issue from the other day was with FF after all, strange. Unless something was fixed, that is.

I'm on now and it works great for me. I don't know if this helps, but I'm on Chrome, not IE.

I did make a few small changes. If it's working as intended it will play sounds and do the the title bar animation if the window does not have focus when a message comes through. If the window has focus it won't do the sound or the animation.
So far I've tested it on Chrome, IE 7, FF (Mac) and FF (XP) and it seems to work as intended on all of those.
In the next few days I'll be adding functionality to modify your profile (country, games created, etc). As well as a lost password retreival.
Thanks everyone who's joined up and had a chat so far!

You can now modify your profile (link at top of page once you're logged in). This will be handy to all those people who got their country / games wrong because they were in such a hurry to sign in ;-)
I've also added a password retrieval link on the log in page.
Enjoy!

Dang... short run for me. Company "Smart Filter" blocks it now (most likely because of the "chat" in the domain name) :*(

Surprisingly, the IP address itself is *not* blocked, but it's a virtual IP so I can't access it directly anyway. (Well, if I was using IE then I could probably throw together a hack with Fiddler to force it into working -- but I use Firefox... not sure if there are any good tools for modifying HTTP headers with that.)
