    Zune HD to Non-HD Networking

I ported over a game I had developed on a Zune 4 and a Zune 80 to my new Zune HD.  Networking worked for the 4 and 80 and I was able to get up and into multiplayer without any hitches.  However after upgrading the project to 3.1 and then deploying the new upgraded project to the Zune HD and the Zune 4 I can't seem to get them to connect to each other.  Unfortunately I broke my 80 so I can't test it on that.

Is the Zune HD network compatible with the old Zunes?

Ok I'm not sure where I saw this and I will have to find the article, but I think I saw somewhere that you couldn't play online with the old Zune's against the Zune HD. I could be mistaken so let me find the article, but I'm pretty sure that's what it said.

I believe what you're thinking of is the sharing between Zunes.  It no longer works that way, as the Zune HD will only send songs to an email address or Zune tag.  It could be that there is some magical little change between them so you have to configure whether you're connecting to a Zune HD or older Zune though.

Forgive me as I know nothing about this, I just happened to be browsing here.

In addition to the sharing it was possible for games to run over a 'network' where you could see other zunes nearby and play multi player games. Thats what they are asking about. I've not tried it yet myself.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Really, though, has no one else tried this?  Don't tell me I'm the ONLY person out there who's tried playing a game over wireless between a Zune HD and an older Zune.

It would seem that way... I've pinged some folk for an official answer so hopefully someone will reply soon.

i tried it as well, they don't connect with the zune hd. older devices still connect with the older devices though. i'm guessing that they are different versions because of the touch and new modes and things. I should be possible to play wirelessly with each other.

During development, we tried it and saw that it didn't work. After a bit of panic, the Zune guys confirmed for us that it wasn't supposed to. Many months later, I wrote this anecdote and became internet famous.

This is officially not an official answer, but from what I remember, you shouldn't expect it to work.

Re: Zune HD to Non-HD Networking

I pinged around a little and the official answer from the Zune and XNA is that its not supported which confirms Stephens almost official answer.

There's some underlying technical reasons that make the networking between HD and original not work and since XNA sits on top of that it will not work either. Yes that sucks, but my impression is that there's nothing that can change to fix it. I didn't get all the details so I'm not going to try to go into it any more.
