    Networking doubt

    Hi,

My name is Luismi and I'm from Spain even though nowadays I'm in Ireland. I have to do my computing project here, and my option for that is the following : Make a multiplayer game for Xbox 360 and Zune HD (the same game) and play online with both machines.
Nevertheless, I don't know if I would be able to connect Xbox 360 and Zune HD to the same server an play the same game online, a kind of cross-platform multiplayer.

    If anyone can help me.

    Thank you.

    Re: Networking doubt

    • Xboxes can talk to other Xboxes over Xbox live. You have no access to anything over the normal internet
    • ZuneHDs can talk to other ZUneHDs over an adhoc wifi network when you are close to each other. You have no access to anything over the normal internet
    • Original Zunes can talk to other ZUneHDs over an adhoc wifi network when you are close to each other. You have no access to anything over the normal internet
    • Windows games cannot talk to Xbox* or Zune networks. You cannot use XBL networking in a released game. Other than that you can do anything you like with any other API for networking

Unfortunatly there is no way that you can do your project as described. You can make a game that will be multiplayer on like platforms but nothing can cross over.

    * During development your windows machine may take part in a system link XBL session for testing purposes.

As I said, in a windows game you can do anything you like other than use the Live networking APIs.

    So yes.

    Re: Networking doubt

Is there any other way to get access to raw sockets (network) on xbox. I mean I understand it I won't be able to get it now but lets say in future, i was a registered "Game tools and middleware provider" or some other way to get access

    Re: Networking doubt

If you are a registered XBLA/DVD based developer then you can try to negotiate whatever you like... i have no idea if its technically possible though. All the player to play interaction goes over encrypted xbox live. This is not something anybody can just join like creators club though - you need lots of $$$ and a high quality game.

Its been indicated that most games dont get any special access but there are ways to make your game interact with back ends servers for thngs like the Halo stats and videos. That may not be done through general sockets from your game

In other words don't hold your breath.

    Re: Networking doubt

You can definately access more of the internet as an official devloper of xbox 360 games.

I seem to remember there was a game called "Shadow Run" that featured cross platform multiplayer from both the xbox360 and the PC.

However as Zman has said we Indie developers are limited to Xbox to Xbox, PC to PC or Zune to Zune.
