    Export fbx problem

I have used XSI 7.5 for a long time, and have successfully created many textured models. and exported them successfully.
But for some reason the past few days, the model didn't draw any texture on it.
I did a lot of investigating. When I would import my recent.fbx and go into the texture editor there would be no texture coordinates
I imported a.fbx  that i made a few weeks ago, and it loaded texture cordnates correctly, that one also drew correctly in my game.

So I have come to the conclusion that my .fbx exporter isn't exporting texture coordinates, for the pass 2 weeks max, and 4 days min.
I didn't dl anything in that time frame.

and autodesk came out with their softimage2010 so there is no links for anything xsi7.5

if i check for updates, it looks for a second says its dling updates, stops at 0% and says its finished and needs to restart, and i do so, but it does the same thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

    Re: Export fbx problem

I found this in the softimage wiki.

    http://softimage.wiki.softimage.com/index.php/Crosswalk_v3.x#Crosswalk_v3.3

it says that a known problem with crosswalk 3.3 is export memory leak.
I don't know what a memory leak is, but it might be whats going on. If so how would I know and/or fix it.

And now My fbx export isnt loading texture cordnates. but if i open a scene it does load texture information.

I was thinking maybe a reinstall, but softimage just got a new 2010 version and links got moved around and whatnot, so i am not sure if reinstalling would allow me to get the current updates.

    Re: Export fbx problem

I'm having the same problem that I can't export FBX models with materials.  The link that Kilroy posted might have some insight.  The memory leak isn't what is keeping this from working but perhaps the other last known issue is...

  • UDEV00252382 - FBX: Material are not exported if there's no texture connected.
  • I have a texture for my material but perhaps I'm not understanding the extent of this bug.  Does it need placeholders for the all the texture params to be connected?

My model can be saved fine with the XNA extension 'Publish model' command where it saves it as an xsi file... but I don't want to use the XSI content importer in my project.  I'd rather save it as a fbx file.

If someone has the fbx export working with an XNA project, can you please post the steps needed to export it with materials.  I'm on the verge of switching to Blender if I can't get this to work and don't want to because of the time I have invested in learning XSI.

    thanks

I have been all over the net looking for solutions, the problem is with that, is that some people are saying it works fine and other are saying the same thing as you and I, but the majority: no one responds.

I have included textures and they were attached, and the problem still remains.

This whole problem doesn't happen in 6.0 but 6.0's user-interface is not as good, and all my projects are 7.5

Why don't you want to use the Crosswalk importer? Is this a documentation problem?

I have had myself a lot of problems with the Softimage FBX exporter (normals and texture coordinates). Softimage is part of Autodesk now, so maybe we can hope there will be a better support for FBX.

By the way, Digital Tutors has done a pretty good tutorial on using the Crosswalk pipeline between Softimage and XNA. It is entitled "Shader Pipeline with XSI and XNA". Maybe it can help.

Maybe I have found what is wrong with the FBX UVs export. In the render tree, you should open the texture image node and set the correct texture projection. By default, it is blank, and Softimage is capable of figuring out what texture projection to use.

Here are the FBX options I have used to export the mesh. I think we can ignore the warning message.

And here is the result in XNA with the basic effect and the default lighting enabled.

As you can see the normals problem still remains, but the UVs are good.

    Is this working for you?

    Re: Export fbx problem

No when I export, the result in XNA is a solid white. That is the default color for polygons in XNA.
If I import that same file into XSI 7.5,open texture editor, in textured view, it is the default phong color and i see no normals. I click on scene, and use the hierarchy tree to navigate to and through the imported mesh, there is no "Texture Support" , no "Clusters", no "Projections".
If I import an old .fbx that in XNA draws correctly(proves its not XNA) these are present. With that I can say that the import is working correctly so the export must be dropping them.

    Re: Export fbx problem

This is weird. I have imported my FBX file in Softimage and all is good, even the normals, which makes me think that the normals problem is exclusively a Softimage->XNA problem.
Is your texture located in the same folder than your exported file?

Yes. The issue I believe is in the crosswalk .fbx exporter.

    Re: Export fbx problem

In fact. I found a way to get around this problem but its long and it still doesn't fix it. and I don't know if ill run into problems later.
1.)in 7.5 I can go to crosswalk-Export(not export fbx, just "Export...")
2.)under crosswalkfiletype put xsi 6.0, because i still have that version
3.)browse any file location. click export
4.)if no errors, open up 6.0
    5.)crosswalk-import(not import fbx, just "Import...")
    6.)browse for other file.

All my texture coordinates are there. from there i can use the XSI 6.0 crosswalk fbx export.

I would rather fix the original issue, but this at least lets me do some model work for the first time in 3 weeks.

I am in progress of making a step-by-step video, showing how I have exported the textured cube.

    Re: Export fbx problem

I was struggling like crazy with this as well.  Fortunately, it looks like Crosswalk 4.1 fixes the issue of getting UV's AND animation out on the same model.... and it only took 'em 6 versions to do it!!

    Re: Export fbx problem

I have just uploaded on YouTube the step-by-step video for exporting the UVs with the Softimage FBX exporter (Crosswalk 3.3). I don't know if this can help. You can find it here.

I have installed Crosswalk 4.1 and it seems that it is available only for the complete versions of Autodesk products. Softimage Mod Tool still uses Crosswalk 3.3. I have tried Crosswalk 4.1 with Softimage 2010 and I have not seen any difference. There is still a normals issue. Have you any success with that?
