    Amendment to Rules Regarding Mixed Language Games

    Following text is taken from this news article.


    After plenty of discussion and much deliberation, we’ve consulted with the XNA Creators Club Online Japan Team and have put a plan in place that will work for everyone; coming to a compromise when it comes to traditional Mah-Jong tiles in games. If your game contains traditional Mah-Jong tiles, you can submit it for review, but must also include Japanese as a language. Premium Japanese-fluent Creators will then review the submission to confirm that the tiles do not contain any offensive or alternate content. The rules are as follows:

    • Xbox LIVE Indie Games with any traditional Mah-jong content must declare Japanese as one of the languages in the game.
    • Any content other than Chinese Mah-Jong Title content will automatically be failed in Peer Review and declared as “Inappropriate for Xbox LIVE”

    This is because we do not currently support China as a region and do not have Peer Reviewers fluent in Chinese to assist with reviewing. These rules are made to keep the entire system safe.. The best way to help is to be excellent and thorough Peer Reviewers. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you find anything that you think could cause trouble or cause concern. Our forums are a great place to search for the answer and we're always happy to help creators@microsoft.com.



    While it may clear if it is written in Microsoftese, it is not clear at all as an English passage.

    I wonder how many people understand this one. I guess it means that "Any Chinese-language content other than
    Chinese Mah-Jong Title content will automatically be failed in Peer Review and declared as “Inappropriate for Xbox LIVE”
    But I'm not sure if I'm right. I hope that non-Japanese peer-reviewers won't confuse kanji-character contents with Chinese-language contents...

    Yes, please interpret it as:

    • "Any Chinese-language content other than Chinese Mah-Jong Title content will automatically be failed in Peer Review and declared as “Inappropriate for Xbox LIVE” 
    Or better yet, as:

    • "Any content using a non-supported language other than Chinese Mah-Jong Title content will automatically be failed in Peer Review and declared as “Inappropriate for Xbox LIVE”

    I hope that non-Japanese peer-reviewers won't confuse kanji-character contents with Chinese-language contents..

    If you have Japanese declared as a language, than the non-Japanese reviewers have the duty to leave the reviewing of these characters to the Japanese reviewers.
    Then, it's the job of Japanese reviewers to validate if the characters are indeed kanji-characters, or something else.

    Given that the context of the post is "traditional Mah Jong tiles" the two bullets put together make perfect sense to me. Also I would suggest that this be added for reference - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong_tiles

    Those are the symbols that are allowed basically. If the tiles in a Mah Jong game uses any other Chinese symbols or other non-allowed language characters, it's a fail. Plain and simple. :)

    How does this rule apply to Greek characters commonly used in math and science?   Greek is not a supported language.  Is my game going to be failed because I used an alpha or omega symbol?

    I can't imagine they would be an issue. Chinese/Japanese Kanji characters are full-blown words, while Greek characters are... letters. Unless you're spelling out Greek words with Greek letters, I don't think there's a problem.

    Of course, I'm nobody official, so you should take what I say on the subject with a grain of salt.

    Does this mean that if we got enough reviewers fluent in Chinese that Microsoft would consider adding Chinese to the list of possible options? Although I'm no native, I'm fluent enough to feel confident in reviewing Chinese games (lived in Taiwan for 3 years & studied Chinese at college, play the occasional PC RPG in Chinese).

    As long as China isn't a supported region it won't matter how many Chinese reviewers we have.

    Mathematical symbols are fine. We'll make sure to fail it for some other reason. :|
