    XNA Game Studio 2.0 Released

On behalf of the XNA team, I am pleased to announce the availability of XNA Game Studio 2.0 beginning early morning Dec 13th, 2007 PST.

To get your own copy of XNA Game Studio 2.0, head over to XNA Creators Club Online at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101280&clcid=0x409. There, you’ll find information on downloading both the Windows tools needed to develop games as well as information on downloading XNA Game Studio Connect so that you can deploy games to your Xbox 360 console.

Since we first released XNA Game Studio Express a little over a year ago, we’ve made a lot of improvements, including many features you asked for. Two of the most important new features are support for multiplayer networking over Xbox 360 and Games for Windows using LIVE and support for all versions of Visual Studio 2005.

Please make sure you check out any known issues in our readme at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=97935&clcid=0x409. If you have trouble with your installation of XNA Game Studio 2.0, visit the XNA Creators Club Online forums, where people (including many members of our team) will be around to help you.

Once you get running don't forget to check out the Dream-Build-Play 2008 Warmup Challenge with several great prizes.

We've also got you covered with new samples and starter kit's updated for XNA Game Studio 2.0. Over the next few days and weeks, we'll refresh and enhance our developer education lineup.

Finally, as always we’d like to thank you for helping support XNA Game Studio by trying out our betas, using the product, and giving feedback. You are instrumental in driving our product and making the vision of user-created games a success. When I consider the amazing number of great games this community has produced in the past year, I can’t wait to see the games you create with XNA Game Studio 2.0!

Two questions for you but, firstly thanks to the XNA team for such a great product :)

Question 1: I have downloaded the xna connect but, when I go to launch it, I am greeted with a this software is not yet available. Is there something else I need to do. I have a creators club subscription and the XNA launcher works fine.

Question 2: Can I safely remove the xna launcher once connect is working?

For all things there is a first time , a best time and a last.....

    1. It has been said that that a properly configured version of Connect will be on XBLM in a few hours, the one that you and I have downloaded is misconfigured and is no longer available. Just give it a few hours and it should reappear.

    2. Only if you don't want to run 1.0 games on your Xbox. Game Launcher handles 1.0, Connect 2.0, they live side by side so there isn't any great need to delete it unless you're pushed for space.

Thanks for the reply Adam. I'll remove the current version of connect I have and download the new one.

Hi, I have been trying to install XNA 2.0. I had the beta installed and have uninstalled it. However, when I try to install XNA 2.0 it comes up with a message saying "Setup has detected that the original source is necessary to continue. Please redownload and execute XNAGS20_Setup.exe."

Have you any idea how I can get around this?

    Thanks,
    David

Re: XNA Game Studio 2.0 Released

I just got a chance to try out deploying to my 360. I love the new Game Studio Connect, My Games twist UI, and Device Center stuff. Huge usability improvement and I feel so special with my games living alongside XBLA games :-)

Of course, all my previous praise stands from the beta.

    Congrats on the release!

Re: XNA Game Studio 2.0 Released

so the 2.0 eula states we cannot sell anything we produce for xbox, nothing using LIVE, but ALSO nothing with networking functionaility even if we are using our own networking implmentation.

explain again why we should upgrade?

we have to pay to deploy to xbox (fair enough) but then everyone who wants to play has to pay the same (with no indication or gaurantee there is anything worth paying for, so they won't) and if we have used v2.0 then we cannot even try and sell it.

think i'll stick to refresh and write my own networking code.

    anyone care to comment?

You know thats how I read the EULA first time through... but the text version is so badly formatted its hard to see all the headings... the 'no network at all' is under the xbox heading. Basically they are saying that you cant work around xbox security and find some other way to run a network game on the 360...

On windows there are no restrictions...

    b. Programs developed for the Xbox 360 Platform
    ....
ii. Commercial Networked Programs. In the absence of a specific agreement signed by both you and Microsoft which specifically grants you the rights to develop commercial programs that connect to any network, including Xbox Live and/or Games for Windows Live, you may not use the software to develop commercial programs that connect to any network, including Xbox Live and/or Games for Windows Live.
