    DBP Entry - Tzu

Me and my team desperately need to get to GDC '08 to find a publisher and we can't afford to pay our own way.

So a little over 48 hours before the DBP warm up deadline I ate as much sugar as possible and coded more furiously than I have ever coded before. First thing, I didn't even have an idea for what I wanted to make when I started, secondly I have never built a 3D game before, only tech demos, and 3rdly my team does not have a 3D artist. I looked at a bunch of AI applets and Flash applications and realised that flocking AI could be used strategically in a way I don't think has been done before.

Here's what I came up with. Tzu is an RTS game where your troups form units using flocking AI, giving orders to just a couple of units enables to player to split and join group units in attack results in emergent tatical combat, there is much more fluidity than in a C&C style RTS and all it takes is two buttons, one to select troups and the other to order them a direction to go in. Hope something like this will help bring RTS games from the keybaord exclusive systems to wider console play.

All was written completely from the ground up in the 48 hours except for an MD2 loader class I used from Ziggyware if I remember rightly, althout I did re-write most of that too. We're hoping Microsoft will want to showcase what can be done in such a short time with XNA.

I was not happy with the graphics so for some reason I spent 6 hours writing a fur shader for the grass, which isn't fun when you're hallucinating I tell ya...

My concerns are that I didn't have enough time to write a proper description, I was literally writing it seconds before the deadline.

Welcome to the last minute club, there's pie in the back.

The addition of grass was a nice touch. It looks good, adds a nice touch of depth.

    Good luck.

Do you have a link to some screenshots of the game you are trying to get published?

    Hey,

I think you might have commented on an older version of our video, although it's all old stuff now, here's another with some extra stuff followed by some more recent HD shots.

I realised my release version was drawing the grass first instead of last, the grass should have blended like this...
