The XSI mod tool has stopped working at all for me. I try to run it, run it as an administrator, run it with and without my wireless network connection and all combinations of those factors and I get the splash screen, %50 cpu usage, lots of HD activity, but a trip to the bathroom and a sandwich later, still nothing.
I uninstalled it, downloaded it, re-installed it without effect.
I uninstalled it. Rebooted, re-installed it, rebooted, without effect.
I uninstalled it, rebooted, ran a registry cleaner, re-booted, re-installed, re-booted. Same thing. It won't get past the splash screen.
I'm running vista 64 with 2 gig ram and 2 gig speedboost and an Nvida GE 8600 511mg graphics card. The only thing I can imagine is that the last vista update did something as I have changed no settings and have installed nothing else since the last time I used it.
Any ideas?

Byron

Re: Mod tool fails to start

If it gives anyone any clue, when the mod tool is started from the start menu, it immediately grabs about 1/2 gig of ram, and steadily grabs more and more (watching it through the task manager). After 18 minutes, it had grabbed an additional 90,000k before I killed the process.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Re: Mod tool fails to start

Hello Byron, which driver number are you using ?
Cheers!
PS: ModTool should take about 160megs on startup and should not increase once everything is loaded.

Re: Mod tool fails to start

Hello Alexandre,
The system is an HP Pavillion Dv9500 (laptop) running Vista 64.
The card is Nvidia 8600M GS, and the driver is 7.15.11.6743. (hp site says everything is up to date, and nvidia refers the user to the hp site for drivers for the mobile version of the card)
On start, it seems to grab about 160 meg, then it almost immediately doubles, 320, then 540, then 560, then 562, then about 100k per second increase from then on.

Re: Mod tool fails to start

I am using 6.14.11.6375 and it seems to run fine. I have an NVIDIA 6600. Could you try:
1. Turning off Aeroglass and see if it still leaks
2. or reverting to an older version of the driver
I have yet to find the exact driver download on the web, it seems that the HP driver section is even older that the driver you are mentioning. Here is the page I found:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2100&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=3255934
It has 7.15.11.5665

Re: Mod tool fails to start

I appreciate your time with this.
As you suggested, I've tried runnig it with aero off, and it behaves essentially the same. It starts, gets up to about 30,000k memory, then jumps to over 500,000k and continues to grow.
The most recent driver reported by the HP site is curious, since I only use the HP Update software that comes with the computer to check for and install updates to the devices, so I assume the driver comes from their site. The differening numbers is probably an oversight on their part.
I did roll the driver back, and XSI behaved exactly the same, with or without aero.

Re: Mod tool fails to start

Thanks, we'll check it out. We have tried reproducing it on Vista 64 with a 8800, (thinking maybe it was a 32bit running on 64bit problem), but it still not reproducible on our side. Still searching. If it's not too much trouble, is it possible for you to try the trial version of XSI http://www.softimage.com/downloads/XSI_ess_trial/default.aspx and see if it exhibits the problem ?
Cheers!

Re: Mod tool fails to start

I'm downloading as I write & will let you know how it works out promptly. I cannot help but think that a Vista update is what killed it.
Though it could sometimes be erratic (hanging at times) it was working.
Then, I went for a period without doing any graphics work, and when I tried to use it again, it simply wouldn't start. The only system changes in between that might have affected it were routine vista updates.

Re: Mod tool fails to start

Both the 32 and 64 bit trial versions install, start, and appear to work without problem.
After playing with them a bit, I can see that the free Mod Tool never worked correctly on my system.
For example, using the trial versions, after putting in a sphere primitive, I can scale, rotate, and translate it with the menu at the right which allows you to key in values.
On the Mod Tool, the menu on the right of the screen which allows you to key in values never worked.
I just assumed I had not spent enough time with the introductions. I could key in a value, and nothing would change.
