AURORA NOVA: "Epic War Reloaded" -FPS game

                           Aurora Nova

                      “Epic War Reloaded”

                                    by Tim S.

[I will post my Cover Image Later]

    Prelude:

They are the apocalypse. We just don’t know it yet, we just can’t accept it; won’t accept it. Who would? Humanity has survived great wars, floods, earthquakes, and even super viruses. But in 2068, it happened. They came; on a comet. Millions of comets have hit Earth since its very beginning. Some say life was seeded on Earth from these comets. It was only a matter of time before another comet with life forms collided with our planet. It was just another comet at first; it ignited and shriveled in our reactive atmosphere. It hit in a South American rainforest. But they woke up; and they evolved. No one saw it coming. At first they were small and appeared like insects. They swarmed and they annihilated. But they grew, and they changed. They invaded our planet - and even our minds. Within a year South America was devoid of all sentient life. Within two years they spread to Africa, America, and Asia. We realized that the source of their powerful mutagenic life cycle was in their chromosomes. They had only one set. This meant that one simple mutation would result in a completely individual new organism. They could change and adapt. And we will never be able to predict exactly what we will be fighting, how we will fight, and when they will find us. Today, in the year 2072, everything we thought we knew is gone. The Earth and most of humanity has fallen to the bugs. They now claim over 90% of land mass. Parts of England, Australia, Russia, and the United States stand alone in the dark torrent that is the Swarm. But thank God we still own all of the oceans. That’s where many of us hide. Our only true safe haven, which we all know will fall. But we will not give up. When the remaining nations fall, we know we cannot hide forever. No, we will bring the fight to them. We will crush them like the insects they are. We only have one chance however. We need to destroy the hive mind; The Regina Dictyoptera or “Matriarch”. We know that she controls them; they are not intelligent, but they are coordinated. When she dies, they will die under one crushing blow after another from a scourged humanity. We just don’t know where she is cowering. If we fail, humanity will descend into the annals of time, we will become extinct! And that’s where I and my men come into play. We are the ECF(Earth Coalition Forces)717 Desolators; an elite group of American and European forces. We are the last organized military in the world. Our only mission: to destroy anything and anyone that gets in the way of saving our species.

The ASCEW’s (Advanced Singularity Constructing Explosive Weaponry) heart and soul is found in the Novallenium Atom; Discovered in 2064. It is spawned within the environment of a super nova. Unfortunately for humanity, it may be the only truly effective weaponry against the tough and numerous “Warriors of the Swarm”, but fortunately we have ways to construct it on Earth. But due to the nature of creating it, it is in short and slowly rebounding supply. The atom, when mixed with Uranium and then allowed to touch Oxygen, will react explosively. Packaged in anaerobic environments, the Novallenium/Uranium compound is unreactive in its bullet’s casing. As soon as it hits an enemy or structure however, the casing ruptures and the compound violently reacts with the oxygen in the air causing a massive brilliant blue and light blue explosion, and then the compounds reaction radius collapses in on itself as it sucks anything light enough into it and crushes the matter exponentially as it’s sucked in. It then explodes one more time in a small arch. Its true deadliness as a weapon is that it does extreme internal damage when exploding in the enemy’s body, and then causes even more damage when severing internal organs and arteries as it collapses on its own explosion. This means that even one well placed shot in a humans arm can disable him as he painfully bleeds out. This is humanities saving grace. The bugs of the Swarm are tough. You can chop the head off of a cockroach, but it will live for a days.

    Enemy Units

    - Infected: Those that are controlled by wasps. They don’t last extraordinarily long as their bodies begin to die, but they are just as intelligent as the human host and just as capable of using weapons and machinery.

    -Berserker: Basic large Spider-like unit

-Titan: Large beetle like organism that can shoot large poisonous barbs in many directions. It can also pierce armor and flesh for that matter with it’s large, sharp, and pointed front legs.

-Defiler: Human sized and structured organism that can fly short distances, shoot small poison barbs. Visually it looks something like the alien from alien movies. It can charge and slice enemies open with its machete like arms. It also has a tail with a point at the end that can whip or pierce the enemies flesh or light armor.

-Wasps: No, these aren’t your typical wasps. They can fly short distances. They are unpredictable. They are capable of mind controlling human enemies. In unconscious humans, they will climb through the mouth and into the body, and then they wedge themselves in the foramen magnum, controlling the host. A controlled human can infiltrate human cities. However these insects have incomplete control. They cannot fully control many of the major organs functions. As a result the infected quickly become pail yellow from jaundice, and the body dies. It is then that the wasps young emerge infecting more people. In addition to this, they can poison an enemy with a quick sting. Enough stings and you will die. And these guys are everywhere. Luckily they are easily detected in a human body with a scanner and after subduing the infected host, a quick “Insecticide” will kill the bug. If caught fast enough, the bug will be killed with little or no permanent damage to the host, but if symptoms of the bugs presence arrive, then the host is already saturated with young wasps and needs to be destroyed immediately.

-Crippler: Not much is known about this new species

-Scorpio Spiker: A deadly flying scorpion like bug. Most of its legs are fused together in a bat like wing. Its body is equipped at the head with large fangs. At the tail there is a deadly sword capable of cutting a man in half. The fangs are not poisonous.

-Matriarch (Regina Dictyoptera): The hive mind; Photographed by an American Marines Combat Unit. It was somewhere in the United States. It is a massive parasite that has a facial region with jaws and long branching limbs that extend for dozens of feet. With these limbs it feeds off of harvested humans and other larger organisms. They are injected with foods, which their bodies in turn make into sugars and proteins that the Matriarch cannot create. They were able to decipher and assume this much, before their transmissions ended.

    - There are new species all the time. Some seem to outlive their Swarm usefulness and die out, and others emerge. These are what most soldiers will encounter this year.

    Red  = Infected areas

    Teal = Humanities last hopes

Idea: People fight their way to expand human territories in different continents. Player can choose various areas to attack the enemy. These areas are denoted by green arrows. At various points in the game, the player can travel to a different continent to attack and learn more about the fate of humanity, and even the salvation of humanity; with various side quests in most of these areas. Essentially, you can choose where you fight and when you fight most of your battles. It is a world with a semi-linear plot. At some points you will have to do certain battles, and some  points, you can choose. The safe point will be the underwater cities of the Atlantic Ocean. “Atlantis” will be the capital of the United Under Water World Nations or UUWWN, with some side quests allowing the player to retake underwater cities that have been besieged by the Infected. There can even be a space station level.

                                            |

                                           \/

[again, I cant post the image that is normally here but I will]

The interesting part will be that when visiting Atlantis, the player can talk to people, and hear their stories; the player can also initiate romance subplots, and view ECF videos of different weapons in actual firefights. They can also view ECF videos of enemies of the past and present. In addition, the player can research technology, earn and spend credits and experience points on new moves like rolling, taking cover, ASCEW weaponry and more.

     -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Underwater Cities

    - Atlantis (capital) [Main area of return after missions, to restock, discover weaponry]

            - Outpost Omega

    - New Australia

            - Outpost Gamma

    - New Europe

            - Outpost Alpha

    - New America

            - Outpost Beta [Captured by the Swarm near the end of the game, after an aquatic/marine bug has arisen. The bugs then heavily guard it, preventing human intervention. The Matriarch moves to this location, to absorb incredible amounts of information about humanity. The Matriarch not only gains all the information it needs to finally annihilate humanity, but it is also able to better control the Swarm as it’s telepathic instructions to the Swarm are amplified when they travel through that much water, allowing Swarm in every reach of the planet to hear its commands. The final command is given and thus the final battle begins. This is where the player fights the Matriarch and this is where humanities last stand takes place.]

    - New Russia

            - Outpost Theta [Captured during the game by the Swarm, player has to regain control of the outpost as the Swarm could gain valuable information on the location of the other cities. This is a somewhat dark and scary mission, infected and Bugs jumping out from all directions. A perfect scene early on where a flashing light (denoting the fact that backup power is on) is rotating around, illuminating only one part of the room at a time as it spins around. Suddenly an unexpected face appears next to the small squad as a light flashes by it, and the next second it’s gone. The squad immediately tries to locate where the bug went, only to have it drop from the ceiling killing two and injuring 1 of the 4 man infiltration squad. From here on the player must complete the mission by himself, with a little help from the injured character who locks himself in the control room. The Bug that attacked is determined to be a brand new species of bug, very deadly, fast, and silent, later dubbed the Infiltrator.]

    Space Stations

    - Hope (On Luna)

    - Destiny (On Mars)

    - Dawn (On Mars)

    - Twilight (Orbiting Earth) [Destroyed part of the way through the game. Can be made into a level where the player tries to escape the station just as it is destroyed.]

    Space Ships

    - Your Drop ship (Miranda)

    - Warships (Arcadia & Independence)

     -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Game specs:

-You can choose a female or male character and model them in any way.

Character modes are a possibility as well (Heavy weapons specialist, Covert Specialist etc.)

-Health system much like Gears of War and Mass Effect, taking cover allows you to heal

-Sometimes you will have squads, sometimes you will fight alone, and sometimes you will have large computer controlled support troops for large battles and invasions. Sometimes you will be able to choose to go alone or lead a squad. You will gain more experience points and credits when fighting solo, but sometimes you absolutely need a squad as backup. You can use your experience points to increase your sprint speed and duration of sprint. You can increase your strength so that you can take more damage before dyeing, and you can deal more melee damage. Or you can increase your intelligence which gives you the upper hand when purchasing items and weapons, and allows you to be a smoother talker. (Like in mass effect there can be a dialog system, but much less in depth than in mass effect. Also while in the middle of dialog, your screen is not static, other people walk by and behind the character on your screen, etc.)

    Stats Upgrades
    1. Strength- Increase (Increases damage and health/armor, customizable armors, but visual changes only)

    2. Agility- Increase (Increasing opens purchasable abilities like rolling or taking cover in addition to increasing speed and endurance.)

    3. Intelligence- Increase (Opens more chat options, lowers prices of most weapons, and makes other weapons easier to research.)

-Will be an online mode with a very large map where players must fight their way through enemy lines and destroy the enemy with live coordination with online allies. Game is over when the enemy loses all their spawn points and territory.

-Will also be another online game on a small map with multiple players like many other shooters.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE REST IS JUST VERY SPECIFIC IDEAS; feel free to read them and enjoy, but they are not neccessary to you understanding this game. Thanks!!

-When talking to one of the possible romance-able characters, you will see a television broadcast where a couple of men debate on some of the upcoming issues that humanity faces. One argues that “when” the swarm can become marine aquatic, that humanity will need to release a toxin into the ocean killing any and all bugs across the ocean. Another man argues that that will kill all life in the oceans, and fish are among humanities last reliable sources of food. The other man exclaims that it is the only option as Earth would soon become a lost cause. He also debates that without animals of the ocean, the Matriarch and the Swarm would quickly run out of food, as terrestrial organisms had been almost all harvested or destroyed. He claimed that this would then be the end of the Matriarch and that humans could emerge from hiding and devastate a Swarm in disarray. The other man closed his argument; “we agree that humanities last chance will be to destroy the Matriarch. But what path will we choose? A passive one? One where we attempt to starve the Matriarch at the expense of all Earth’s creatures, who are our past ad our future; Earth’s legend? Or the active approach where we show the swarm the potential of a scourged humanity and mount one last attack; one to utterly destroy the Matriarch. I say we will show our resolve, and above all else, our superiority as a race. We are Earth’s only hope, and the Earth is our only home; destroying it to destroy our enemy is not an option!!!!”. With this the other man asks “And who the hell do you think can pull that off n……” As the camera pans to the player and the world slows down for a moment, and “Who the hell do you think can pull that off” gently reverberates. The character he/she was talking to then says, “Hey are you okay?” and the game continues.

-Make one level based at a United States Funded scientific research facility in South America. Your squad’s first thoughts are “why there are so few bugs in the area”. While looking for something else, you discover that the facility had been studying genes and genetic mutation. Next you discover that they managed to recode dinosaur genomes using birds. There were several dinosaur species housed in complexes nearby. When the Swarm infested the area, a few got free, and began to reproduce. As you escape with the info you specifically came for, you are ambushed by a few bugs. The bugs are then killed by a swarm of velociraptor like dinosaurs. A few of these raptors begin to attack and then flee. Their reason for running becomes apparent as you turn around to see a T-Rex staring inquisitively at you from down the path. Your squad then is forced to sprint to the chopper which takes off as the T-Rex lunges. A squad member says “And after the Swarm, I thought I’d seen everything”. Another replies, “Well now you have”. “What F’in next?”.

-You can also cure infected in battle with a dart gun that immediately paralyzes the victim and cures them over time. This will gain you extra points vs. just killing people. Also if you cure a certain person, they will end up giving you rewards for saving their lives.

-A good first trailer would be one where a squad of soldiers is trying to take back a desolated city in ruins. The whole screen and environment is a darkish blue grey with a wind blowing across the terrain and the main soldiers face. The effect of this wind blowing on him could look something like the underworld scene in Constantine the movie where everything seems to be almost disintegrating under the wind. The next part takes place in the towns square, where some bugs are sparring with each other and on the lookout with an infected in the middle with wasps on him; then the squad attacks killing the bugs and the infected. One squad member is killed and then another aims and shoots his Aurora Nova completely destroying the rest of the bugs. Then as the trailer comes to a close the camera pans out away from the city and across the nearby mountains to see some flying bugs and an army of other bugs approaching the city.

-A second trailer taking place on a major battlefield. First you see Devastator tanks pass by the camera shooting, with the infantry running by them at a faster pace, seconds later. Then the camera watches the rotating turrets on the tanks, as they can hold 4 shots at a time, and rotate to reload and shoot, almost like the triple cannons on the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean. The camera then pans to the battle lines as insects and humans alike charge each other; the humans shooting ASCEW weaponry, desolating the forward bug forces. Some bugs shoot explosive barbs killing troopers and blowing up tanks and humvees. The humvees will look like the humvees from Jurassic Park 2 with weapon turrets hanging off the sides for extra fire power. One large Titan breaks the lines destroying a Devastator, only to have it shot point blank in the face by a tank 15 feet to the right of it. The camera pans back to the lines where the troopers show off the Aurora Nova and other weaponry. Finally a Gunship Chopper unloads an epic amount of fire onto a group of bugs before being shot in a rotary blade with an explosive barb causing it to crash into and burn another group of bugs.

-Good commercial theme song, a new form of the song possession by sarah mclachlan where the only words of the song are, “listen as the wind blows” from across the great divide”, voices trapped in yearning, voices trapped in time” “The night is my companion, and solitude my guide” and then the song picks up a heavy metal or rock tonene that fits the fight scene of the commercial.

    -in-game song, Kyrie-Orbis Factor

-ending, To open the possibility for a sequel, the very last scene can have the camera focus on a wall with the optical effect of light reflecting off of wavy water onto it. The same effect that can be seen in the end of the movie “The Faculty” where you see the reflection of the monster and ripples of water-bent light all around it. So here you see the tentacles waving amongst the reflection on the wall. Obviously there is another Matriarch, and she talks to you, showing another jump in evolution of the bugs. She says in a raspy but clear voice. “Humanity is such an inferior species. You place your devotion in symbolism?... Why do you fight us? We came from the heavens. Are we not then gods?... Yes… we are, and Gods do not die. Prepare yourselves, we are your Infinity.”

possible level idea(may be too out there). Your dropped off at a research facility high above a plateau/mountain formation. Your buddy gives you a parachute to take with you. He says “Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it huh?” You say, “Yeah, we’ll see”. At the end of the mission, you are chased by a swarm of bugs to the edge of a cliff where you jump off. You press a button to release a parachute. Flying bugs pursue. You have to shoot your gun while wobbling back and forth in the parachute. After killing a few, your dropship chopper flies in to assist. Eventually your parachute is damaged as the last bug dies and starts spiraling towards earth. It’s dead body rips a corner of the chute and the rip widens and spreads until the chute is useless and you start plummeting to earth. You must quickly press a button for the reserve chute. After this you can glide on your parachute in any direction you like until you lose all your altitude and land. Here there gunship drops a line to you and pulls you up if your stuck, and if you landed in a good area, you can simply walk around and find goodies and hidden items.

wow big post..lots of names, lots of info.. but im confused to catch whats the purpose of this post..

are you making this game??? how much you have done already??how many are you??you want feedback from people???are you recruiting people?? or it is just an idea of " it would be cool if" dream like style of post just for the sake of posting hehehe i dont really understand what do you expect from this post...

becuase it sounds like a plan of a really large project not really suitable for a few people

please specify what is the purpose of this post ..because just the text of a story without explaining anything else of why is here .. makes this post a bit non sense

I plan on working on this game until it's all planned out and ready to be made into a game. I just want opinions on how fun these ideas sound for this game. I am majoring inn computer science and this is my game idea for the future. I wouldn't need anyone to work on it with me now because its a few years away from being makeable.

    Just opinions...

    Cool?

    Yeah?

    Ney?

Have you made any games previously?  If not, I suggest you try making a few "simple" ones.  Everyone has cool ideas.  They're a penny a dozen -- it's a cruel but true fact.

If you had read his post, he said he's still years out from making this. He's just asking for opinions on his idea and it sounds like he's well aware of the fact that he won't jump right in this.

To the OP: I read most of it and frankly, it sounds really generic. It sounds like most sci-fi shooter type games with nothing that stood out as a remarkable idea. That said it isn't bad, it's just nothing spectacular. Also, if you are gathering comments ideas, try your best to shorten it up. Really what you want to do is explain the core of your game. Explain what makes it different than other games or what makes it really fun.

Try to sum it up in fewer paragraphs since most people really don't want to read an entire novel just to get the idea of your game. We don't need a description of your game's cutscenes or a full script; we just want to hear what's going to make people want to play your game.

I have to agree with Nick here.

I understand that you want to build a strong story around things but there is just so much going on here with constantly changing insects enemies but sometimes dinosaurs and underwater cities and space stations and squad AI and hive mind enemies and there's just a lot going on here.

I say pick something and really drive it home instead of adding too much.

Re: AURORA NOVA: "Epic War Reloaded" -FPS game

You have a few details on gameplay, and that's something at least.  You have a stats system, indicating some kind of RPG hook.  Is the game to be open world?  Zones?  Is there backtracking or linear level progression?  These are the points that help you differentiate.  Slight deviations from a Hollywood plot won't get you far when the competition in that space runs 10 million dollars a game or more.  Some early stage refinement/iteration of gameplay concepts would be a fine start.  Even a comparison to other titles in the genre would help give us a better idea of what you have in mind.

Some more general advice: be careful with your wording.

    • Good commercial theme song...
    • Good level idea...
    • Great ending...

When trying to get feedback on a design doc/pitch/one-sheet, it's best not to have self complemetary language.  By all means, talk up the game, but make sure it can't be construed as tooting your own horn.

Re: AURORA NOVA: "Epic War Reloaded" -FPS game

Thanks for the ideas. Yeah I didn't intend that to be tooting my own horn. As for it being generic, how so?I think it's original as I have never heard of a game where insects take over the planet and humans use this type of weaponry. At least I feel the weaponry is original right? I can see the point on shortening it for you guys as well. So I will attempt to shorten it as soon as I have the time.

    Thanks for everything guys!!!!

    Any pros  and cons??
