Re: What Starter Kit would you like to see next?

When can we get XNA 3.0/VSE 2008 compatible Starter Kits?
If a user has a clean system and installs Visual C# Studio Express 2008 w/ SP1 and XNA 3.0, the existing Starter Kits will not install. You will get an error stating that you must have VS 2005 or greater and XNA 2.0 or greater.
This is a serious blocking bug.
Finding the old products and installing them as well is not a good or long term solution.

    Thanks,
    SND

We have them converted internally and are just going through our final test pass and acceptance. I'd imagine we'll have them out this coming week.

Hello, I'm new here and I'm not good at programming.

I double this request, I would like to see a starter kit or maybe links and tips for an action adventure like Soul Reaver / Devil May Cry.
Maybe there is allready a "how to make Quake 2 in XNA from scratch" tutorial out there, something like that would be nice.

I have a friend that is better @programming so he will understand more, but some tuti's like that would be a great help.

The promblem with a fps guys is the fact that they are way harder to make than the basic ones they msde.  I think it would be nice but i wouldn't be expeecting it soon.

Re: What Starter Kit would you like to see next?

I will put my vote in for an FPS starter kit too.

So many games revolve around that style of gaming....

I think the size limits for X-box releases might seriously hamper being about to do a good FPS though.

Re: What Starter Kit would you like to see next?

A starter kit that handles a game with lots of dialog would be awesome. Games like Animal Crossing or Phoenix Wright have tons of lines of text that make the game what it is. On top of the text, they also have sounds and different text speeds when certain words are read. Maybe a re-usable text box class with word wrapping and the previously mentioned features (sound, variable text speed). I really appreciate what you guys are doing to help us out. Thank you!

I guess I expected the Robot Wars game to be a good starting point for a FPS, though it is premium content. I think a lot of people looking for a FPS starter kit are actually looking for something like Valve's Source Engine SDK.

And they would be wrong to expect something like that IMO. :) Robot Wars is a great example and converting it to an FPS would be a good way to start.

I agree, Jim. Back to the topic hmm, what Starter would I like to see? Oh probably a basic Small Arms-style dueling game.

Hm, so would I. But, I think you could just use another tutorial/example/starter kit for multiplayer. Just having the basic functionality would be more than enough for me.

Re: What Starter Kit would you like to see next?

    Here's a few ideas...

Imagine if Asteroids were an adventure game. Same gameplay, but add the space-trading and exploration element. Check out Gate 88, then take it a step beyond.

I'd also love to see something like a Wing Commander, but again, more open for exploration. Even if the starter kit is mostly smaller maps with dogfights in mind, expanded universes aren't too far off. Vega Strike is a good engine, but I think that something similar for XNA with simplified controls would be killer.

I wouldn't mind seeing a tactical RPG kit. Maybe isometric.

While I would like to see an FPS kit, I think that an Elder Scrolls style kit would be more useful. Using such a kit as the basis for an FPS would allow for a richer game than just running and shooting.

Lastly, I would really like to see something like a "Metroidvania" kit. I know it's just a matter of modifying a sidescroller, but it's different enough. There has to be map transitioning, items and upgrades, maybe even NPC interaction.

FPS starter kit makes sense to me. Would be useful for a lot of people. Or a 3D RTS Command & Conquer style.

Whatever it is, I think it needs to be 3D and not premium.

How about a SCUMM/SCI/AGI adventure game engine?
