XACT Under Vista, and "Wrong Format" errors

XACT Under Vista, and "Wrong Format" errors

Since the release of XNA GSE, I've been running under Vista.  C# 2005 express and the patch worked fine, and I managed to get everything installed through the "administrator" hack, but one thing has never worked. XACT.  I assumed that this was because I was running under vista, and wrote it off as a "next version" thing.

However 1.0 refresh has just been released, and XACT still doesn't work (as no new version was included), so I began to hunt around.  Found that the DirectX SDK contains a shiny new version, and in fact there have been two other releases of the XACT tool since the October one included with XNA GSE.

The XACT that comes with the DirectX SDK now works fantastically under Vista, but the format for XACT projects has been changed, and XNA can no longer read the XACT format.  I currently get a rather explicit error "Wrong Version" when trying to load.

So my question is "what version of the XACT tools run on Vista && output a format that XNA GSE will read?".

I'm at a loss at this point, and rather surprised that a new version of the tools was not included with the 1.0 refresh anyway.  XNA users are now more than a couple revs down.

Living in silence.  Hope someone can help,

Are you running XACT with Administrator privileges?

No, no.  The "administrator hack" I was talking about was to get XNA installed under vista.  The current version of XACT (DX SDK April 2007) and XNA (1.0 refresh) do not run as administrator.  Only the original installation.  See http://letskilldave.com/archive/2007/02/08/Getting-XNA-Game-Studio-Express-to-run-in-Windows-Vista.aspx

My current issue is that the old XACT doesn't run under vista, but the new one does.  however XNA won't read the new XACT format.

Game Studio express installs the correct version of XACT into the GSE folder - its linked from the tools folder on the start menu.

I believe it is still the October 2006 SDK version, which as you correctly pointed out still has vista problems unless you run it as Admin.

There is no workaround for this, its just what has to be done.

Understood.  Thanks for the prompt reply.

No future versions of GSE have been yet announced... watch the blogs and the forums I'm sure it will be very visible when there is something to tell.
