Project name: October Engine
Brief description:
Hi, I represent a new studio called
Red October Studios. We're putting together a team of developers to produce a 3D engine + Game with the intent to provide an MMO-esque FPS/Roleplay Environment. The engine's goal will be to look great, and be highly modifiable - with 3rd party scripting support to make it easier to add mods / gametypes.
Quoted from Shellnew,
History:
After doing this for some time, we decided that we had a working formula for a Large Playerbase, First person shooter with Roleplay, RPG Influences. A sort of Multiplayer Multirole Shooter(MMS) where a player has the ability to play different characters, not only react to, but control the shaping world around him and kill people with firearms. We strive to get away from the MMORPG Feel. Grinding for Levels, Item Hunts, yes, these things would find a small part, but in a much different light. If any of you have ever played Garry's mod, You'd understand, but for those who haven't worked/played it, basically, you utilize the Source Engines Physics component to create a Sandbox.
You can use physics to create almost anything your mind can imagine. From complex machines, to fortifications, to NPC wars, to deadly puzzles, to insane death devices. The construction is really up to you. It's kind of like when you were a kid, with Lego's, but replace the fun shaped building blocks with couches, buses, knives, guns, and broken down buildings, all coming together spot retextured, to create something entirely different. A whole new world. So, inspired from this, we aimed to create a new genre. Most certainly not an MMORPG, and not entirely an FPS, but something deeper. The players ability to control the world around him and his ability to take on different roles and responsibility provides a measure of depth we haven't seen in any other genre.
The "RP" scene has taken a lot of criticism, specifically in games where the player must imagine his "World Changes" and can't actually effect the game itself. From Jedi Academy, to Half-Life Deathmatch, players have been standing around doing anything but shooting each other and calling it Roleplay. We're trying to grasp an idea that has blossomed and wilted many times over and bring it into new light. Now, our full equation isn't explained here, I've only given some spot examples and a brief overview. I have several paragraphs of detailed information and methods that I'll spare you from reading at the moment. But, we've done our research over the last 5 years and we really think that we can create an immersive new gamemode and that we can do it outside Source, Garry's Mod and Lua.

Target aim:
Shareware/Freeware
Compensation:
Since this is a new studio, we obviously won't be able to offer compensation right away, if any of our games or products makes a profit, it will be evenly distributed amongst the team involved.
Platform:
Computer (Windows)
Technology:
We will be working on implementing Audio, Physics, Networking Capability, Post Processing Effects, and other elements of a game engine into an engine we can use for future products.
Talent needed:
Programming
General Programmers (Visual C# experience, Visual C++ experience)
Engine Programmer(s) (Visual C# experience, Visual C++ experience)
Graphical Programmers (Visual C# experience, Visual C++ experience)
Networking Programmers (Visual C# experience, Visual C++ experience)
Art
Modelers (Character Modelers, Weapons, Buildings, Vehicles)
Animators (Character Animators, Weapon Animators, possibly Vehicle Animators)
Artists (2D Textures, Graphics, etc)
Design
Game Designer (Always good to have one on staff to help out with gameplay issues and ideas)
Gameplay/Goals:
Our first goal is to get a semi-flexible, good looking, engine. This is so we can work on future projects later, and provide great content with our games. First we will work on the engine, then we will work on a game using the engine, and it'll go from there.
Why / Notes:
Red October Studios was recently formed so that a team of talented people aspiring to get into the game development industry, could have something of great quality on their resume, and experience is everything when you're applying or thinking of going into a Game Development job.
Important Notes:
We're not recreating World of Warcraft, we believe that's been done an insane amount of times amongst developers, we're looking to develop an engine for future games that will tap into untapped markets, like an MMS.
