    Bloc - "A new twist on the top-down shooter"

    Since the DBP site is broken right now, I've decided to make up my own DBP entry website for my team's game, Bloc: http://www.metacreature.com/dbp2008/. There you'll find a video, description, screenshots, and a link to the download.

    Anyone can feel free to download the game and give it a go. Let me know what you think!

    the infinite number of files fragmented my 360 HDD so bad i can now only use the memory card.
    Seriously though,its original, simple,good graphics.
    The bad stuff-  the rotation and fire-ing seemed laggy,maybe it is intentional or design flaw?

    Just tried your game and I really like it a lot. Very polished and great idea. I had to get used to firing the color instead of the direction with the buttons, but when you align it right and don't turn but move instead you get into it and after a while you can get into the rotation. I really wann try the co-op feature so as soon as I can find someone I'll give it a try. NICE!

    good luck

    Wow! I'm impressed! MVPs rock :)

    And Nick allowed us a glimpse beneath the surface and how beautiful designed his code must be when he packed his game in 900KB :)

    I don't know about beautiful code, but it does go to show just how amazing that CCGAME compression is. The game uncompressed is right around 12-13MB.

    Looks cool. :)

    I had a similar idea for a rotating color wheel in my game, but it hasn't gone beyond an early stage concept demo (the wheel isn't even animated).  You can check out a 30 sec vid here: http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=f0c4e063-671e-4c51-841e-0a3b9b53bae6 , but I am not responsible if your eyes start bleeding.

    i have technical problems with the game (i cant play it)

    when it stars everything is fine. I play the interactive tutorial with no problems. When im going to start the game, the screen goes black for 3 or 4 seconds but im still listening the music. After those 4 seconds, the game exits.

    If its something about the grafics, i use an MS VGAcable with a plasma TV. The resolution i have now is 1360 x 768 px. And its PAL...

    It crashes each and every time you try it? Or did it just happen once? I can't imagine the television is a factor as I had it tested on pretty much every set up known to man (thanks, #xna!). In fact, I'm not sure what the issue could possibly be as I've had it tested on lots of machines without issue. The only, possibly obscure issue, is what language is your Xbox set to? Perhaps that is messing something up (though, what, I can't even imagine).

    That won't change at all. All of the text is hard coded into the game. I make no attempts at localization in the game at this point (I will for XBLCG, though).

    Though I doubt it will have an affect, I appreciate your testing it.

    Hm. What storage devices do you have hooked up to your Xbox 360? Your profile obviously has at least LIVE Silver since you have a CC subscription. I can't think of anything that should be causing a crash at that point. I'll wait for the video and see if I can guess based on the timing. Otherwise I might have to add some debugging into it and get you that build so it will help me pinpoint the problem.

    Re: Bloc - "A new twist on the top-down shooter"

    Alright. I guess I'll have to try making a "debug" build that will somehow display some of the exception (I assume is being thrown) text so I can have some idea what the issue is. I'll post back when I get that finished if you'd be willing to run it for me. Probably will be later tonight.

    @Nick

    I played your game and I enjoyed it! It's one of the best that I have seen lately :) Good luck in the competition!

    @Silvermax

    I saw in your video that you also have my game "Squared" on your Xbox. Do you like it?

    Good work Nick! Cool lookin title.... Im gonna check out the demo probably tomorrow. I'll let ya know what I think....

    EDIT: 900KB? That is one heck of a small download.... 12/13mb down to ~900KB. The CCGame compression is amazing! My game was roughly 108MB and my CCGame Package came out to ~37/39MB.... its nutz!

    Re: Bloc - "A new twist on the top-down shooter"

    I tried this game out recently (thanks a ton for releasing the .ccgame file!) and enjoyed the polish and concept of the game.  I can't wait to try out the multiplayer!

    The main thing that I think the game needs is some objectives or goals other than just scoring points.  Something so you can see you're making progress with the game.  Maybe various levels as you reach a certain score.  Could be something as simple as changing the background/music or more advanced like adding different enemy types or giving your ship new abilities.  You could start the game off at an easy level where the ship has just 2 colors and the enemies are all just 2 colors then as you advance a 3rd and 4th color are added.  I'm sure you have lots of ideas.

    I found myself getting bored quickly and needed something else new other than just score to keep me wanting to progress further.

    I'm sure you have lots more in mind, that was just my 2 cents based on my first impression.

     Cheers,

    - James
