Get your game in a magazine
|
Hey!
I thought long and hard about which forum to post this into, and I decided on this one in the end because I'm interested in people who are working towards actually distributing their community games rather than just having fun with XNA.
So: the US Official Xbox mag has already run a feature on XNA. I've been asked to write a feature for the UK equivalent (same company, different country) - it's not going to be more of the same, because I already have a game approved for sale, and want to talk more about the people, the games, and the process. That's where you come in.
I'd like to feature as many XNA games and their creators as I can. It doesn't matter where you're from, and it doesn't matter how big or small your game is - I've you've made a game and are trying to get it onto the community games system, I want to hear from you. I'd love to include screenshots and quotes from you about what attracted you to XNA, what's unique about your game, and such; think of it as some free publicity, but also as a way to encourage other people to join in. It doesn't matter whether you're a one-man band, whether your game is 1MB or 100MB, or any other such restrictions; the way I see it, every game can contribute to the community games movement, so I'm interested to hear about the people behind those games and their motivations.

Why you all guys just think on game makers when talking about this Community? I do think you're completely wrong if you think that way. Many, and I mean MANY, people has made or is making tools, components and systems which work on XNA, and are for using within XNA titles. Hey, beleive it or not, they work as hard as you with your games when creating their tools, systems, etc. and some games from here are using them. Writing an article just centred on XNA games, but not that kind of different efforts is, in my opinion, unfair. Didn't that magazine write news about new game engines, motion systems, physic systems, AI systems and things like that? In Spain they do. If wrote a magazine article, I would talk about the whole Community, not just the game creators (although they, obviosly, would take the biggest part of the article, because of the user's interest on what new titles will come with XNA). But, ok, I got it. I had to have created my own game to be part of this, instead of wasting my time creating one of those "oh, that's not a game" systems...

Abel, it's probably because this magazine is for end-users. End-users don't care about libaries and tools. You can't show cool screenshots of libraries and tools. All the end-users want to see is what games they can buy and then read a bit about the people making them. If this was a developer magazine I would agree with you, but it isn't. Showing them libraries and tools is a sure-fire way to bore them and get them to skip right over the feature.
I also emailed in. I would love to see Bloc in a magazine.

I passed your game. I did my community part. Now it's a dog eat dog world for limited marketing opportunities. ;-)

Nick Gravelyn:it's probably because this magazine is for end-users
Maybe I didn't explain well. I mean that I would speak about what the people is doing, including libraries and things like that, because the future of this service relies somehow in those projects too. Can't you put cool images? I don't think so. Many game engines have sample pictures or videos, for example. Should you talk deeply about those things? Of course, not in that kind of magazine. But you should talk about them anyway. In the most famous online Spanish magazine, for example, they sometimes tell you news, not in deep, about new game engines, new tools and new techniques which hopefully will be part of the games we will see in, maybe near, future. And, yes, it's an end-user magazine. That's what I mean. Hey mates, not all is amazing graphics or cool music. That's the main problem of current commercial titles. Don't make the same mistake, because I beleive in this community as a place in which people will create new imaginative things, different from the ones you can buy now, because publishers just put their money on games they think are going to sell LOADS.

Added my email to the batch you'll be receiving. :)

Hey!
Thanks, everyone, for emailing me; I didn't anticipate *quite* so many responses, but I guess you can never have too much input! I've sent you all an email (the same email; sorry!) outlining what I would like, but I may ask further questions based upon your responses. The goal is simple: show the world all the great things you've made, so the onus is very much on your screenshots.
Thanks for helping!
Paul

Being a print magazine, the images should be the highest resolution possible as well.

Paul, we just sent you some screenshots, quotes, and more. We never received the mass email you speak of here, so I hope what we sent is sufficient, and I hope it makes your cut! :) Thanks!

So what ever happened with this? Has it come and gone? Was it all a lie?
