"Tell a Friend" about your game

    Splitting this from http://forums.xna.com/forums/p/28442/159128.aspx#159128

I agree & one way to help gamers do that would be to bring back "Tell A Friend".

Maybe this is something we could simulate in game somehow?

Hmm. Is there a "Send Text Message" command that could be inacted inside the game? If so, maybe that would be best. Lot easier than trying to add a feature to the dashboard.

    Tommy McClain

Indeed there is. Guide.ShowComposeMessage is the method you want for that.

But let's get back on topic of reviews. If you want to discuss things like sharing games, start a new thread.

    Thanks Nick.

So yes, it looks like you could add a menu item in the game that would say "Tell a Friend". Just automatically include a canned message describing the game, how much it costs & where to get it. The only problem left is a link to download the game from Marketplace. Is it trivial to include such a link without updating the dashboard? What about an Xbox.com URL instead that the user could type in their web browser? You would need some kind of generic variable since the URL will not exist during peer review.

I originally added request on Connect for "Tell A Friend". Here's the link...

I may need to add some comments regarding this latest idea.

if it worked like the current invite system, to where if they dont have the game it would take them to the marketplace location to get the game that would be neat.  the precedent is there.   An offline invite system

This is an amazing idea! I just tried it with passing in a short message and a null for the gamer send to and it pops up the send message dialogue where the player can select who to send to. Definitely adding this to our game...

    Thanks Nick!

Ah crud - now I'm going to have to update both of my games.

Hmm. I wasn't aware about that. Could you send me an invite for a game? I'd like to see how that works.

Neat frito! :D Let me know when you both have done it. I'd like to see it implemented!

I know I’m not supposed to ask people to review my game in the forums but if you are interested in seeing the Tell a Friend feature in action checkout our game Jonny Crush in playtesting. Once in a level hit the pause menu and it is one of the choices. We wanted to put it in the main menu but unfortunately did not have room.

Let me know what you think.

I think thats a perfect reason to direct someone to your game, you are giving back to the community with a cool feature, you've discussed its implementation with everyone... thats what we need to see more of round here and less of the 'please review my game becuase its all about me'

I would love to test it out, but considering I don't have a premium membership I'll have to wait till it's on the Marketplace. I definitely be on the look out for it. ;)

BTW, I agree with Zman I don't see nothing wrong with requesting people to try out a new feature. If you can't do that, then maybe we shouldn't be innovating anymore. LOL

Cool, I'll check it out later. I have a good idea of how to do it, but I'll wait a few weeks before updating since my game was just approved yesterday.

    Oesis,

are you just sending a message to a friend or are you able to send them to to the marketplace link for your game?

Unfortunately I cannot think of a way to direct them to the marketplace from within the message.

All I'm doing is setting the text of the message telling however the recipient is to check out our game on the Community Games Channel, of course the player can always override the text and say whatever they want though.

    I see,

so you are giving players a way to send messages without having to hit the xbox guide button then going to messages.

Yes, like most people in the world I believe if you give the a button to push they will instinctively push it to see what happens. I'm just hoping that by popping up the dialogue with the text already entered they are much more likely to tell someone about the game then if I just leave it to them. It was really easy to implement and I figure it might add a few sales when we finally go live.

yeah, maybe if there was a Guide.ShowMarketplace(GUID ####) or something that we could use. maybe if it was limited to only be able to use the GUID of the game it was called from, to limit abuses.

This sounds like a great idea, I look forward to trying it out and spreading the word

anyone open a connect issue on this?   this would be a really nice feature.

I mean it could work like the current ability to buy from in game as it is now.   except with the ability to send it through a message

Check my message at top of the this thread. I posted a Connect issue last week, but today Microsoft closed it & added it to their internal bug database. Will be interesting to see if & how they implement it.

I don't mean to plug my game either...But since I did come up with the idea, I just wanted to let everyone know that an update for Awesome Tank is currently in review (link). The Tell a Friend option is available at both the start menu and the pause menu, in full or trial mode. It'll be interesting to see if this impacts sales at all (auto-updates would really help in this case!).

Good deal. I'll be looking for the game on the service once it passes review. ;)

I guess higher sales is about the only thing that will be an indicator.

Thanks! But this is just an update - the game is already live; but the current version doesn't have the Tell a Friend feature. :-) (marketplace link)

@Oesis: I guess so. I'll wait and see if there's a noticeable spike in sales.

    Hey all,
My game hexothermic has this feature in the highscores table, so when you check them out, you can tell a friend how many points you scored on which game mode. Been in since december :-)

    Good Idea!
Hope you don't mind I borrow your idea. Adding it to the High Score Screen is a natural place that players might want to get a little bragging rights :)
