    How to compress music?

When using XWMA in XACT my 12MB wav found dropped down to 7% in size and the song had no pauses when it looped. I seem be having some trouble replicating that effect. Even at the lowest quality compression in the content manager, my wav doesn't get that small and it sounds awful.

Is there a way to get the file that small or at least close to it without using XACT? Mp3s and WMA files have noticible gaps when looping.

Well this is interesting.. It seems no matter how I compress the music the Sound Effect processor will give me an xnb output of 12MB. When using the song processor the size is smaller but the large silence gap when using media player is a serious problem.

I'm beginning to think I"m rather trapped here.

Well in the end, I ended up caving and using XACT. It's pretty clear that it's much more supported than going stand-alone as I've been running into problems all night without it.

To anyone out there thinking of making the same mistake, my advice to you is... Don't!

Note: Also I was wrong XWMA compression seems to have the same problem although to a lesser extent.

For our game, we used XACT for the sound effects but for the music we used the MediaPlayer routines as the compression seemed much better (at least on the Windows side of things). This was for XNA 3.0. I am not sure if anything has changed for 3.1.

I'm curious why you felt like you should avoid XACT? It's never been anything but a sweetheart to me...

[That being the first word I thought of to describe XACT suggests I may need to step away from it for a while... :-p]

Eli blogged here about what audio encodings the various technologies support.

If you need gapless looping, you will have to use either XACT or SoundEffect rather than Song.
