    DX11 problem on Vista

I just got the fancy DX11 SDK for Vista, and installed the beta-platform update (without problems) -- however, DX11 ain't working. Running any sample says that the components are missing, and I should check the knowledge base, which points me at the update, which is installed ... I tried the D3D11Installer sample, but it says DX11 not installed, and when it tries to do so, it fails.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? That's quite a show-stopper, as I used to have DX11 with the previous SDK (and yes, I uninstalled the March SDK before installing the August one).

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

My steps (worked for me, Vista x86):
    0) Uninstal previous SDK
    1) Download & install Vista SP2
    2) Download the beta-platform update & execute it
    3) Get & install updates, restart
    4) Install SDK

After these steps I have C:\Windows\System32\d3d11.dll and other new files.

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

Well, I did SDK first, then the platform update, but no luck with d3d11.dll -.-

I just deinstalled the updates and the SDK, rebooted, installed the update, rebooted, and still no D3D11.dll -- just trying to install the SDK. It says successful for the updates, but somehow the d3d11.dll is not installed. I get a D3D11Ref.dll installed by the SDK though.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? I checked Microsoft Connect, but there is no entry for DX, so I wonder how to report this problem correctly ...

Update: Some guys at Beyond3D have the same problem, with localized Vista versions (same here, running German) ... du'h :/

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

    See the release notes:

Direct3D 11 Samples may fail to start on Windows Vista

For the August 2009 DirectX SDK, all the samples and tools use the RTM versions of the Direct3D 11 Runtime OS components. These components are not installed by the DirectX SDK Developer Runtime nor by the DirectSetup REDIST. Deploying these components on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 requires installing KB 971644, which in turn requires that Service Pack 2 for these operating system is already installed. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 already include the Direct3D 11 Runtime OS components. Without these components, some of the Direct3D 11 samples will fall back to Direct3D 9 rendering, while others will fail to run.

For more information on KB 971644 and handling Direct3D 11 prerequisites, see the technical article Direct3D 11 Deployment for Game Developers.

Ah, I mean I have installed platform update=kb971644 successfully, but still find no d3d11.dll and still can't get D11 samples run.

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

    Hi GraphicsNinja,
So you have Vista SP2, and the platform update for Vista...but the d3d11.dll is not being installed? Well that is the reason the samples are failing, since the Direct3D runtime isn't installed. Let's see if we can get that resolved. Are you running the english version of the platform update? Where did you download the platform update?

    Thanks,
    -Sebastian

Try DaVinci's steps and I don't have vista installed, but you might try right clicking your install files and choose run as administrator.  Disable UAC might help

    Hi

Don't work for me :( I followed the "steps" but... nothing... I have always this message :

Direct3D 11 components were not found, but are available for this version of Windows.

This topic is dead ! There is nobody !

As I have already written before the beta works only on English Vista versions.

    Think Ralf !

Do you know when it will work ?

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

I also got notified that the beta update only works with en_US Vista versions. The RTM version (which I expect around the Win 7 release -- personal opinion!) will support all Windows Vista editions.

    Re: DX11 problem on Vista

I'm getting this issue aswell, I really need this to work because the AAA title we are going to release (in about a month) needs to be tested with this.

    English Vista 64 (uk)
    Apply sp2
    Run the cmd file
    grab everything off windows update
    install aug 2009 sdk

Thats it, the thing just wont update to DX11 and im pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. Can MS not simply provide a download to enable DX11 on vista without going through windows update??

    Edit

Ghosted out the system, started afresh. Followed the steps above, and now it has magically installed. =/
