ToddWorld: There were apparently quite a few steps skipped in the book...and funny enough a spelling typo on the downloaded sample, but at least it was a consistent typo so the example still worked.

From my experience you have to take most "programming books" with a pinch of salt. Some of them
come out like they haven't even been proof read. When I was first
learning basics for 3D programming the book I was reading from switched
one of the variables round for working out a Vector Cross product. It
took me two weeks to figure out there was a mistake in the book.
For the most part now when using a book, i'll do all the tutorials. See if they work... if they don't i'll mark the page. And find the proper way to do it online. This way when i'm flicking through my books for reference I can immediately see what was useful to me in the past and what is more than likely garbage.
