I've never seen a tutorial for something like this anywhere on the internet.
Does anyone know where I could find a tutorial for this? Or does anyone fancy making one?!

There is a decent overview of such an editor
here
. The code examples are in C++ but the ideas are easily translated.

My game Abduction! is like this... it's pretty similar to a tile based engine but when I place something, instead of giving it the dimensions that it would go in the table for tiles, I give each absolute X/Y coordinates.
James's book does a good job of doing this sort of level editor too though a bit different than what I did...
