    Thanks for continuing to investigate Brian!  We'll look into reproing the lost registry key permissions with an Office2007 installation and UAC off.

    I am having this issue as well and thought I would add this...

    Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but it appears that XNA is trying to create a 9.0 project file, and 2005 is 8.0.

    You can tell this by opening the SLN file and reading the information contained within.

    Today i did a complete reinstall of Vista and i reformatted my hard drive (it need doing) . I reinstalled everything for XNA, and no problems what so ever, i can open all the different types of projects from both XNA 1.0 and 2.0 without and registry key issues. I don't know why this is, i can only assume that a different factor caused the issues as the installer (this time around) didn't have any problems what so ever. Very confusing.

    Daniel - if you are referring to the line "Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 9.00" in the solution file, that is something independent of XNA Game Studio projects.  Creating a standard Windows Application gives the same behavior :)

    If you are experiencing the same issues as other people on this thread, could you provide the details of your OS and other programs you may have installed?  For example, are you running Vista with UAC off?  Do you have Visual Studio 2008 installed?

    Thanks!

    I don't think you need to worry about this. The file format version reported in the solution file does not reflect the version of the IDE that created it. You'll see the same thing with any VS 2005 or VC# 2005 Express project, and no XNA GS installed.

    Can you tell me the following:
    1) Did you install all Windows Updates?
    2) Did you have UAC on or off?
    3) Did you install Office 2007?

    Thanks!

    Thank you for supplying the info.  If you get Office 2007 installed, please let me know if the permissions disappear on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT root node.  Thanks!

    I have Vista X86, Office 2007 Ultimate, and my XNA Beta 2 is having this problem.  I tried to follow the procedure to repair the registry key permissions, but I never could get Beta 2 to work for me.

    Daniel - just to clarify, is your problem definitely isolated to this registry instance?  Or does this seem to be a different problem where you have the right registry settings but still cannot open a new project?

    My registry settings were incorrect, but I followed the steps and they appeared to be fixed to where I could access them.  But after uninstall/reinstall, nothing changed.

    Just to triple check, can you load up Visual C# Express 2005 and go to Help->About and see if Microsoft XNA Game Studio 2.0 shows up in the list of installed products?

    Re: XNA 2.0 new project issues. "The project file...cannot be opened...not supported by this installation"

    I've tried reproducing exactly what I saw last night in a VM and I've been 100% unsuccessful.  Installing Office 2007 with UAC off, Windows Updates, etc. etc. etc. and I can't reproduce the exact same thing I saw natively.

    I have found a variety of random forum posts on various sites with people complaining that their HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive has no permissions, and people using the same fix I was using (subinacl), but no causes as to why it happens in the first place.

    I'm still stumped why this is happening to some but not all of us...

    Unfortunately, I was unable to reproduce the scenario even natively.  An installation of office 2007 with UAC off seems to encounter no difficulties, so I'm just as stumped.  I have dropped a line with the office setup team to see if they had also heard similar reports, but as of yet have had no response.

    Re: XNA 2.0 new project issues. "The project file...cannot be opened...not supported by this installation"

    Question.

    I have a new install of windows XP Pro, C# express, C# express SP1, XNA 2.0.

    I can open and create a new windows game, windows dll library, and a 360 game and library. I can install the racing demo.

    However i can NOT open any of the other tutorials other them myspacewar. I am assuming that is because the rest are 1.0 refresh.

    I can open the project file and edit the xml to reflect the proper version of XNA and then I can open the project. However NONE of them will work. I did figure out the resourcemanagement to BUFFER  and the ResolveRenderTarget  being taken out. However none of the examples work they all say that they can not find any texture file.

    the error is "Error loading "content\Textures\cursor". File not found.

    the file is added as content and i am using the asset name tag... or i should say the orignal code is.

    protected override void LoadGraphicsContent(bool loadAllContent)

    {

    if (loadAllContent)

    {

    //Load our own resources

    ContentManager content = new ContentManager(Game.Services);

    PointerTexture = content.Load<Texture2D>(@"Content\Textures\Cursor");

    this.spriteBatch = new SpriteBatch(this.GraphicsDevice);

    }

    base.LoadGraphicsContent(loadAllContent);

    }

    Any assistance would be appricated!

    I had the same error message trying to create a new project using the "Marblets Windows Starter Kit" Visual C# template. I use Visual Studio 2005 Professional, I have VS2005 SP1 installed and I have XNA Game Studo 2.0 beta installed. I don't have Office installed and I don't have (and never had) Visual C# 2005 Express Edition installed.
    Any help to use an XNA Express template in VS 2005 Pro is welcome, hoping it's possible

    The Marblets starter kit has not been updated to work with GSE 2.0.

    To cover both Lagoon and traidwind, you won't be able to directly open any projects created for 1.0/1.0 Refresh in XNA Game Studio 2.0. Editing the version info in the project file XML is not sufficient, as there have been some fairly significant changes to how the projects are laid out, particularly in how content is built.

    To get these working, you have a few options:

    • Use the Project Upgrade Wizard currently available from here.
    • Create a new 2.0 project and manually add all the files in the right places.
    • Install 1.0 Refresh (it can coexist with 2.0) to use the original version of the project.
    • Wait and see if a 2.0 version of the project you're interested in appears on the site. We'll be updating some of these to 2.0 after the final release.

    Thank you very much, both David and Kevin. I see, I was expecting Visual Studio t do a conversion, I didn't know about the wizard. I think I'll take option 2: create a new 2.0 project and manually add all the files in the right place. Reasons are:
    1) I rarely trust wizards :)
    2) Even if I trusted wizards, I don't like when things just happen without me being able to understand what happened :P
    3) I'm learning and it will be a good training
    4) I know I can do it
    5) It's a small template... because size matters! :D

    I formated my computer and it fixed the problem as well as many other problems i was having with different programs. now i've installed most thing such as vc# 2005 express, game studio 1 refresh and 2.0 beta as well as 2008 and most of my other programs. i haven't installed office 07 because i have had quiet a lot of bugs with it but will office 2003 cause this error or will it work fine?

    and was office causing the issue?

    I could only sort of trace it back to Office.  I wrote a blog post about it at my site (www.brianpeek.com/blog/) with some more details.  You may wish to read that and respond to my queries as I continue to find out what the initial cause is.

    Re: XNA 2.0 new project issues. "The project file...cannot be opened...not supported by this installation"

    You were right about the reg keys. I had VS 2005 SP1, VC# 2005 Express SP1, VC# 2008 Express, XNA 1.0 Refresh, all installed on Vista Enterprise. Then I installed XNA 2.0, whereafter I removed XNA 1.0, and I had the same error message.

    Reinstalling didn't fix anything, removing the 2008 version neither, I tried everything. Until I read the subinacl-part (which I also used to fix my Vista Flash OCX problem), and ran the following code's:

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XnaClubPackageFile.2 /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XnaGameStudio.ProjectAggregator2 /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XnaGameStudio.ProjectAggregator2.2.0 /grant=administrators=f

    And ever since, my XNA Game Studio 2.0 works fine! You should try it.

    There were a couple of posts that asked if this was Vista-only.  It's not.  I've got a new Win XP Pro box, latest updates applied,  the only related VS product I had installed was the 2005 Express version of Visual Web Developer.   I did the C# Express and XNA installs as directed.  Received the "not supported by this installation" message from the very first time I tried to create a project; cannot get past it.  I've done 2 uninstall/re-installs since then, even wiped the Express VW Dev off just to be safe, but have the same results.

    Did you try following the steps mentioned earlier in this thread about using subinacl?  If so, is your error message different from the ones that is mentioned in this thread about not having access to the registry?

    Hi Brian. Your solution fixed it for me. Thank you! :)

    I'm on Vista Ultimate x86. UAC disabled, I just uninstalled XNA 1.0 and VC express as I have VS2005 SP1 already. Not sure I understand the reason why this would happen or why this would fix it, but thank you ever so much for working it out!
