I did, but I dont have Games for Windows live so that cant be the problem unless its from the rule thing for the firewall.

To verify, you don't have GFWL installed when you check under Add/Remove Programs?  This was something that was installed as part of the beta but was not uninstalled as part of the beta so would be left behind as a standalone ARP entry.

If this is true, then can you also tell me where in the installation process you see this screen?  Are you in the installation status screen?  If so, what is the text next to status?

Finally, you should have setup logs under Program Files\Microsoft XNA\XNA Game Studio\v2.0\Setup\Logs.  Does your most recent log share any insight as to what the error might have been?

It stops when the status for the install says "Installing Games For Windows - Redist" and this pops up.

I would post the newest log but 5 logs came out for the time it ended and I wouldnt know what to find in bazillions of lines of text.

Do you have any games installed that use Games for Windows Live installed, such as Halo 2 Vista or Shadowrun?  Besides the beta, that would be the only other source that this Redist ended up on your machine.

If you could run the tool described here with a -v switch instead of -p, then search for 'Games for Windows', do you find an entry?  Can you post the entry on this thread?

The log you should be looking at is the one title "XLiveRedist".  Can you post anything that seems relevant to the word 'error'?  I suspect you might see something along the lines of "SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package".  If you find it, can you post that section snippet?

    Thanks!

Seeing as people are still having this problem I thought I'd bump the thread so we didn't get a couple new threads on the same subject each day until a new installer comes out.

I do have Gears of War installed... Do I have to remove the game ? There's no redist in my add/remove listing, so the game needs it to run.

Re: Source Required - Error During 2.0 Install

Setup has detected that the original source is necessary to continue. Please redownload and execute XNAGS20_Setup.exe

I'll try to make this a summary post :)

0: You should only be hitting this scenario if you installed the beta OR if you have some Windows games that requires Games for Windows - LIVE, such as Shadowrun, Halo 2 Vista, Gears of War, Viva Pinata for PC, etc.  If you do not meet this scenario, include that information in your post as you have exited the only known situations where this should be hit and we need to add the new scenario to the readme file.

1: Do you see a Source Resolution Dialog (text appearing as above) during install or possibly Reinstall?  Is it when the status screen text displays "Installing Games for Windows - LIVE Redist"?  If not, please start a different thread - your source resolution issue is a different one than the one discussed here.

2: Have you tried uninstalling, either through Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs in XP or Control Panel (non-Classic view) -> Programs: "uninstall a program" in Vista, the entry under "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable".  This means looking under the 'M's in your program list, not the 'G's... easily missed.

3: If you cannot find an entry to uninstall, please post the following information to this thread.  If you don't, I will simply ask you  to do so :)
-- Run the tool described here with a -v switch instead of -p, then search for 'Games for Windows'.  It may take a couple minutes for the tool to finish inventoring your machine so be patient.  Do you find an entry?  Can you post the entry on this thread?
-- There should be logs found at Program Files\Microsoft XNA\XNA Game Studio\v2.0\Setup\Logs.  Look for the one title "XLiveRedist".  Find the most recent install entry (logs are concatenated, sorry!) and search for "SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package".  If you find it, can you copy/paste in your post the relevant information (e.g. where did it think the package was, etc.)

Re: Source Required - Error During 2.0 Install

My problem differs slightly from ones described above... It is that I can't uninstall the XNA 2.0 Beta due to the same thing that happens when people try installing the new XNA 2.0. I got also the very same problem while trying to install the new XNA 2 and I have removed Games for Windows (I removed it AFTER the Beta told me it won't uninstall).

I don't care much for the Beta and that it does not uninstall as long as I have a way to install the Release...

That seems odd to me that this would activate on uninstalling given that we don't try to uninstall the GFWL Redist on uninstall.  Something else must be triggering this problem for you.

Where does the source resolution dialog appear in the uninstall process?  Before any of the setup dialogs appear?  If it's during the progress screen, what did the status text say?

Also, can you look at your most recent uninstall log under Program Files\Microsoft XNA\XNA Game Studio\Setup\TME and copy/paste it in this thread?

Re: Source Required - Error During 2.0 Install

It's odd, but when going through Control Panel->Add/Remove->XNA Game Studio 2.0 Beta->Remove, the uninstaller acts just as if it was an installer (it tells it's the Beta installer). The first steps are excatly as in the Beta install process. I get up to the 'copy prequsities' and then it switches to the 'Rolling back Microsoft XNA Game Studio 2.0 Installation' screen, under status it says 'Removing XNA Game studio Files' and the popup 'Setup has detected that the original source is necessary to continue (...)' appeears. Clicking OK I get next popups with the same text until it all finishes. All thing looks the same as if I tried installing XNA 2 Release except that it says 'Beta' on the welcome screen.

Under the log directory you pointed out I found multiple directories and files so I picked hopefully a good one for you (it's TME/Results/TaskStatusResults633334165755312500.xml):

Re: Source Required - Error During 2.0 Install

It sounds like somehow your machine managed to get into a state where it cannot detect that the beta product is installed... which can happen after a failed uninstall.  Did you always see the installation screen when you tried to uninstall the beta?  Or did the installer at least the first time give you the Reinstall/Remove dialog?  I hope it's the latter because that's at least a known state to me :)

As for Source Resolution: can you please check {C18DA187-6C0D-4B8E-99AE-74D5C588AFB6}.LOG under Program Files\Microsoft XNA\XNA Game Studio\v2.0\Setup\Logs and search for "SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package".  Can you post the relevant information about the error (e.g. where does it think the source directory is, etc.)?

    Emily,

I think It always came up with the installation screen since the first time (I remember how surprising it was...). Here I give you the requested information from log:

Re: Source Required - Error During 2.0 Install

    Hi DaCoder,

It looks like this is going to take a bit more debugging than just a couple posts back and forth :(  Do you mind opening a connect bug (https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/default.aspx?SiteID=226) with the following in an attached zip file:

    • your entire directory of XNA Game Studio\v2.0\Setup\Logs
    • the results of running msiinv (tool described here) with a -v flag instead of the -p flag as described in the blog post

Hopefully that'll give us enough information to sort out the issue.  Rest assured that I'm relatively sure how to get your machine into a steady state, so you'll should be able to play with XNA Game Studio when this is all resolved :)
