How do I make an icon that works?

i'm pretty sure i know how to change the icon, but whenever i select the icon i want, it says it's not a valid icon file. so i wanted to ask, what are the requirements for an icon file?

file? I never experienced troubles with choosing the icon. Can you provide an icon which you couldn't use?

I know exactly what you're talking about. You can not create .ico files with Microsoft Paint or Paint .net, yet you can edit them. Just edit the .ico file that Visual Studio creates for you.
