The problem must be PC-side. I tried as you suggested and there was no message on the 360 about a failed connection. Was again able to initiate a Media Center connection, so I guess it's time to take a look at my firewall settings...

XNA Game Studio can only install with Visual Studio 2005, and only C# out of the Express versions.Any of those will however live happily side by side with VB Express 2008. :-)
