  • Re: "Roll your own" vs "Torque X"

CrimsonShortOne:   As an example you need to use T2DSceneObjects in torque to take advantage of the torque functionality, but they do not allow textures to be loaded at runtime (there is no fromfile() method on a T2DStaticSprite).  So to get round this I would have to create a custom class, probably based on a T2DSceneobject, but ...

  • Re: Concerned about entering Dream-Build-Play with your game concept?

Also, a final question (perhaps not entirely related to this thread) : is there any information anywhere on how much XBLA games sell, and how much of that the developers get? Or is that top secret? :) Jeff Tunnell (one of the founders of GarageGames) has a blog where he talked about this, and other "money" topics ...

  • Re: "Roll your own" vs "Torque X"

ECHS BACHS: I Looked Over the TGEA Site and it Mentions an Extra 360 License ... No Further Info (?) ???   We've had a Torque Game Engine-Advanced (C++, unrelated completely to Torque X) with an XBox360 platform layer for almost 2 years now available commercially. It's designed for a different market than XNA, and isn't a ...

  • Re: What do you want in a GUI?

What do you mean by acceleration modes? Like if you hold down the tab key it speeds up the input over time? If so, I will definately look into doing this for this new release. Should just be a few changes in the Ebi class. I probably used the wrong term, but I meant key or pad input driven movement between a set of buttons or other active GUI ...

  • Re: What do you want in a GUI?

Basic stuff, and I assume that it was too "obvious" to mention, but things like:acceleration modes (key or other input) (tabbing through the control basically)tooltipscan be very useful :)

  • Re: "Roll your own" vs "Torque X"

I'm starting to see what appears to be a fundamental misunderstanding of what Torque X is, because you can't "see" the engine--what you see are the TGB-X editors, and especially movies and demos of that editor in use. Surix: (snip) Reinventing the wheel as far as game engines go is called innovation.  And the impressive ...

  • Re: "Roll your own" vs "Torque X"

cronholio: Machaira: Why? Pride isn't the best attribute to have in game development IMO. Anyone here could grab Torque X and crap out 3 platform demos in a week, but really where's the fun in that? I know that Torque doesn't do anything I want to do, but even if all I wanted to do was hack out an SMB clone I probably wouldn't ...

  • Re: "Roll your own" vs "Torque X"

Penhalion Wolfe: For me it's all about creating my own games that will benefit me in the long run. Sadly using Torque X proved to be harder then simply using plain XNA. This is due entirely to it's lack of documentation and proprietary component model. This makes it incompatible with any community written components and apart ...

  • Re: Question on GDC slides

CodeCube:Shawn: Son, we live in a world that has firewalls, and those firewalls have to be guarded by lawyers with EULAs. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Machaira? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for XBox Live, and you curse Microsoft. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That ...

  • Re: Writing a GUI framework... Is it worth it?

I wanted to back up Krisc's observations about writing a GUI framework--it's actually a long and involved process.  Keep in mind that both his project and ours are working at the design and implementation issues from an engine's perspective, not a specific project's perspective...a project needs to write just enough GUI work ...
